my daughter has a dell inspiron one19t, it was shipped with vista. i put windows 7 on it and was unable to get the touch screen driver so i telephoned dell, who told me since i'd put windows 7 on it i would have to buy the driver from them.
so my question is
if i install windows 8 on it how can i get the touch screen to work without buying the driver from dell?

You have to buy a driver from Dell? This is odd as driver software from an OEM doesn't cost anything as long as you're not requesting a driver software disk.

i never bought the driver as i thought it was too stupid to be true. i actually laughed at the person on the telephone. i searched sites and found a few different drivers and never got it to work. then according to a dell forum you are supposed to install the drivers in a certain order: ie: bios, chipset, audio, graphics, touch screen then ethernet.. but i never got around to trying the driver install the way they recommend as she got her own house. but i am going to try windows 8 for her

Did you try this one?

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

I've heard of Dell support doing dubious stuff involving warranties, but I haven't read much about them trying to sell drivers.

Perhaps the Win7 drivers will also support Win8. There are no listed drivers there for 8 yet.

The Win 7 64bit driver is on the Dell site and should work for Windows 8.

TouchDell2.jpg

Does not appear to be one for 32 bit.

I service Dell since 9 years now, I call them and order parts quite often, I never see a single driver from sell from them.

Where is the link for paid drivers on this page ?

good on you, i know what i was told, you know what you know so be it
here's what I think ,im thinking the dell support guy meant that you would have to buy a oem win7 dvd from them to get the touch screen option/drivers, [ I worked at a couple of call centers and mistakes are made all the time ]and not use the win7 disk you were using ,and im not arguing with you ,I believe he likely said you need to pay ,but for the system restore dvd with there win7 and software on it
hope you get it sorted out .
also I would advise you run the win8 compatibility with the laptop before you buy win8 for it

this make no sense they support Windows 7 as they have the drivers on their Website, Dell never put drivers of OS they don't support . As CaperJack said , you probably confuse Drivers with something else they want to sell you.

this was about 3 months after she bought the pc new from dells own web site, so i can understand the void of the warrenty, but i honestly heard her say i.d have to pay to get the touch screen working as id put 7 on and not vista as they shipped it with vista
im sorry if ive upset or offended anyone by my post

Are you saying that Dell send this Inspiron with Vista , when Windows 7 was release ? You sure you was not trying to get a Windows 7 for free from them ? And Dell will never void the warranty because you update to Windows 7 , when the Inspiron One 19 was sold later with Windows 7, Nothing make sense in your posts, aside you try to make Dell look bad, this is where I have a problem, because I have great service with them.

i love dell machines, ive bought 6 in 3 years from them, i aint trying to make them look bad or anything, all i wanted was a bit of help sorting my daughters pc out, wish id never bloody bothered now
yes vista was on the pc, id bought 3 windows 7 home install disc from @pcs shop near me called steve. then 2 windows 7 upgrade disc from comet on victoria street, when id installed 7 on the inspiron one19 (not the upgrade version) theres no touch screen, tried the drivers id found, no good...
rang dell, this woman uses remote desktop says somat bought using 7 not vista, says ive breached the warrenty it would cost me.

Ok now it's clear, they probably means since you install Vista, your support is not free anymore and you have to pay for the support ( not the drivers, but the help they will give you to install it ) the hardware is still warranty, it's the free support who is not anymore, this is normal.
