Windows 8 Metro Search Broken

I bet it's the Avast. Does that have a firewall as well? If so, would problems have started after installing that?

Nope, Avast don't have a firewall... But I do have Comodo Firewall... That might be it.

I have the same problem. Some search result were not working others did work.
I have a new Windows 8 install upgraded to 8.1.
No anti virus software installed. No other software installed. Only one account Administrator.
I'am not at my home computer now but 2 searches I can remember were for "update" & "recover".
Results for these 2 search's were not responding to mouse click.
Same as this screen shot from jpottaway

My 2 results and jpottaway would be related to the control panel,
maybe it just apps or result connected to the control panel that are not responding.

Yes, it's the same with me. Anything linked to the control panel won't open in metro search, only the control panel itself will open. It seems now that 3 people have the same problem. I'm starting to believe that Windows Update is the cause to this problem. It is not the first time I have encountered a situation where Windows Update has done the opposite of what it is supposed to.

Solved My Problem,

I have an SSD with the indexing turned off, turned the indexing on and it work perfectly.

I think solution maybe make sure the Windows System folder is being indexed. Follow this eight forum tutorial

Here's the fix that works for me

Hm, I don't have an SSD, still not working, even after trying indexing.. twice.

I've had this issue intermittently since March, and discovered that the Windows Search Service is causing the issue for m.

Simply run Windows - R
Type services.msc

When the services window opens up, scroll down to Windows Search
Right click on it, and select "Restart"

The service will immediately restart and your search results should once again be interactive.

Works for me every single time search gets hung up.

Hope that helps.

Just tried restarting it, but for some reason it still has no effect. I have no idea why this has happened.

You're not alone.... I've been banging on this issue for over 3 weeks now... Tried all solutions posted (reindexing, DISM, Scannow etc)... Still nothing...

I did an upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8 and then Win 8.1....

I always get results, but when you click them nothing happens... Sometimes if I click a result and then go back and click it again it doesn't work the 2nd time like the search reached EOF and then errored out...

The indexes exist because you see it when you do a search, but the links under lying them are non functional. Maybe they are NOT getting built or point to the wrong files???

We really need a Microsoft tech person who understands the underpinnings of how this works and then work backwards to see what was corrupted to fix it. I Googling to see if someone has this issue..

It's annoying because I want to execute commands or go to shortcuts and I have no other way to find them...

@dude24760

I just found this...

Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+EscOptional: Sort by CPUFind and Click “Microsoft Windows Search Indexer”Click “End Task”Go to the directory C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\SearchDelete the folder “Data”

Then try searching for an item... I finally could find the item I was looking for, but if I searched for it again the same symptoms reappeared and it stopped working.... I can reproduce and fix it, so something is getting corrupting after the initial search and I have to reset the data to start fresh. Obviously, this shouldn't work like this...

Hm, I guess we really do need someone from Microsoft to fix it. It don't seem like this will be an easy fix, we might be able to temporarily fix it, but I don't think that's good enough. I really hope we see a fix soon...
