Good Afternoon;

I have a Dell Laptop running Windows 8.0;

Except for periodic crashes & self rebooting (seems that might be my fault exhausting memory by having >100 CHROME TABS
open), the machine runs pretty well HOWEVER,

Over the last year+, I've noticed several symptons suggesting something's not right & warrants repair.

Unfortunately, my efforts so far to ID and properly fix the Root Cause(s) have not worked out [See DATA/INFO at end of this
post].

My sense is these problems all seem related and are seem rooted in 1) some "corrupt or missing" System Files AND 2) some
"corrupt or missing" files in the Component Store (C:\Windows\WinSxS FOLDER).

Where I've run into a swamp causing me to reach out to seek "expert help", was when I encountered suggestions to run:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:Full Path to install.wim file:1 /limitaccess

I'm not sure exactly what I SHOULD (or can, may, or SHOULD NOT) use as a /Source:wim:Full Path to install.wim file [to
assure I do NOT make things worse].

=====================================================
SEEKING RELIABLE ADVICE RE THESE QUESTIONS PLEASE:

1a>Will one (which?) of the two (2) install.wim files I now have on hand FIX these problems (and NOT cause any damage)?
1b>If not, which "Windows Image" (.ISO & install.wim) file [File metadata & SHA1 data please?] should I get from where to
accomplish my goal?

2>Specific suggestions re other steps I should consider to get these issues ID'd & corrected would be appreciated.
=====================================================

Thanks in advance,
Steveg722

PS: At this point, refreshing or reinstalling Windows 8.0 or upgrading to Windows 8.1 are not on my list of options.

=====================================================
As of this morning, I have extracted two (2) install.wim files from two (2) different .ISO files [See A) & B) below].

Hi,

Having seen few "view" and no replies to my prior post,

I am sharing some additional info/data results from two DISM comands run on 22Aug via CMD_ADMIN

>>TEST_B; Got meta data from the install.wim within the M:\__210812_Win8x64iso\210812dl;9200.16384.WIN8_RTM.120725-

1247_X64FRE_ENTERPRISE_EVAL_EN-US-HRM_CENA_X64FREE_EN-US_DV5.ISO
The resulting data shows the Version : 6.2.9200 + ServicePack Build : 16384
The version of Windows 8 reported currently on this (15r) machine is "the same" (Version: 6.2.9200.16384)
Given that, I next ran >>TEST_F

>>TEST_F; C:\Windows\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:M:\__210812_Win8x64iso\install_wim;EXTRACTED\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

Unfortunately, the result was the same; the problems were not fixed; Error: 0x800f081f; The source files could not be found. Not quite sure why/how that could happen when I used the .ISO source with the same Version????

FYI, I have included what seemed to be some key snippits from the DISM.LOG re each of these tests. Unfortunately, the DISM is still not writing anything to the CBS.LOG (isn't that some kind of clue?)

After the above, I've looked at Properties/Version/Dates of some random files in C:\Windows\System32 and noticed some with Versions >16384.

Sure would appreciate some "Windows 8 expert" would please review this & my prior post, help by A) sharing
thoughts/theories re the info I've shared and B) please point me in the right direction (steps to take to help ID
RootCause(s) & then steps to get them eliminated (make necessary REPAIRs).

Sorry for all the info/data I have included but without it I'm not sure how anyone could really help me much.

Thanks again,
Steveg722

Arggg!
Way too much information!!!

I was a moderator on the old Windows 8.0 forum, years ago. I wish you could have read it, and you would have NEVER settled on that OS as you every day OS.
In short, it was a real POS! And, that's being overly generous!
The only solution to 8.0 was and still is 8.1. Maybe that's why this is basically an 8.1 forum. Eh?

I have ten computers of various types, ages and configurations and all but one are now happily running Windows 8.1/Pro/x86 or 64bit. Even my tiny little, Old, Acer One Netbook.
is very happily running 8.1/Pro/x86.

I know you said that the upgrade to 8.1 is not on your list of things to do, but it should be on your list of things you MUST DO.
If you were local, I could and would gladly show you just how simple it really is to upgrade to 8.1. (for FREE)

Good Luck,
TM :cool:

Unless Dell installed an Enterprise edition that's not the image you want, the OEM is a good place to start but I would guess you have a Home edition.

Once you get the proper image make a bootable USB and point to your USB device for the wim.

This seems to be such a mess it may make more sense to just install fresh but I know this makes most OPs angry and seems like a copout.

I'm going to say it again here - you will eventually get your system working again, and when you do create a full system backup, and put it away, outside of your system - meaning not on a drive inside your case. Make backups atleast a few times a year of a stable, updated, reliable system. This is better than losing it all for any number of reasons the chief being neglect. I speak from personal experience :oops:
