Windows 8 Disk Manager is painfully slow

Any ideas what could cause Disk Manager to lock-up every few seconds? All harddrives (two internal SATA, one external SATA) read healthy, and show no errors under CHKDSK. I have no SSD's, so it shouldn't be a compatibility issue.

I did read about an issue with Mushkin and one of Intel's drivers, but can't find the actual article. mushkingames.com is gone, and their new site doesn't have copies of the old forums.

I ran SFC /SCANNOW and found nothing to repair, but there were hundreds of "Ignoring duplicate ownership for directory" and "Directory ... is not owned" messages. Which is quite odd, given a clean install of Windows 8.

Follow-up. SeaTools reports no problems with my drives and controllers, and I'm using Microsoft's drivers, not Intel's. I'll try disconnecting the DVD drive and/or card reader the next time I open this machine. I suspect the DVD is failing, as it makes whining noises whenever a disc is present, though it can read them fine. It's not a good sign, regardless.
