Windows 8.1 x64 BSOD During Youtube Playback.

Hi guys,

Today I was playing a Facebook game, and I had Youtube playing a song. I scrolling down the Youtube page to see what other songs it recommended to me and my PC crashed. After the computer restarted there was a problem with my video card drivers which was causing everything to be viewed at a different resolution. This led me to believe it was a problem with my video card drivers. Therefore, I checked ATI's website and they have a newer beta driver so I installed that. I was curious to make sure the BSOD was a video card driver issue so I fired up bluescreenviewx64. Its saying the crash was caused by tcpip.sys driver. So now I don't know what the heck is going on. I decided to make a post here to see whats going on.

Any particular reason that you did not use UEFI or SecureBoot when installing Win8?

High Definition Audio Bus is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?

Check the list below for any drivers that date from before the release of Win8.1 (Oct 2013) and update them to the latest, Win8.1 compatible version.

The lone memory dump appears to blame your ATI video drivers.
1) Download a fresh copy of the latest video drivers for your system from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD
2) Completely uninstall the current video drivers
3) Install the freshly downloaded video drivers and see if that stops the BSOD's. If not, post back and we'll move on to other tests.

Hmm I'm not sure what you mean by using UEFI or SecureBoot to install Windows 8.

I'm not sure why that keeps getting disabled. I have enabled it multiple times and it keeps going back to disabled. The only thing I could think it would be is the system is disabling the extra sound from my second video card?

When this happened I was using the latest Beta build from ATI for Windows 8.1 x64. I believe it was version 14.1. After this problem I checked to see if there was anything newer and version 14.2 had just came out. Before this I haven't had any problems after doing a clean install a little while back.

All the drivers I have are the very latest from the actual manufacturers of the devices. When the manufacturer does not have a driver listed on their site I download the latest one for Windows 8.1 x64 from Station Drivers.

Uninstall Sunbelt. Make sure no overclocking of bus, cpu. Update Realtek HD Audio from their site.

Hi Chief,

What is the problem with Sunbelt? I just bought 2 lifetime licenses of it =( Also I have a Swiftech H320 AIO water cooler cooling my CPU. I only have it OC'd to 4.5 Ghz @ 1.25v which is a moderate overclock for an i7 3770k. I have also stability tested it with Prime95 and IntelBurnTest. I have nothing else overclocked at all. I am running memory, video cards, etc at their default clocks. Also, the Realtek driver I am using is already R2.73 which is the latest on Realteks site and still the High Definition Audio Bus does that.

Win8 was designed to work with UEFI and SecureBoot. If it's not installed that way, don't worry about it for now - but if you do another clean install, enable the UEFI and SecureBoot first.

As for the audio device, don't worry about it for now. I asked to see if you had disabled it because of problems. It's most likely that it's disabling a second audio device to prevent conflicts. I'd leave it disabled for now.

Overclocking doesn't show in the memory dump. Intel shows that an i7-3770k is rated between 3.7 and 3.9 gHz maximum: Intel® Core™ i7 Desktop Processor — Intel® Turbo Boost Technology frequency table As MasterChief suggests - remove the overclock until the system is stable (no BSOD's) - then feel free to try it again after the BSOD's are stopped.

There have been problems in the past with Sunbelt software on some systems. Since your Sunbelt drivers date from 2012, they are also suspect (and may not be compatible w/Win8.1). Please uninstall it to see if that helps - then, as with the overclock, feel free to reinstall the latest, Win8.1 compatible version AFTER the BSOD's have stopped

As an example, your iaStorA.sys driver dates from Aug 1, 2013 (prior to the release of Win8.1)
But the latest version available from the Intel Download Center is v12.9.0.1001 dated Oct 28, 2013 (after the release of Win8.1)
Please recheck ALL drivers in the dump that are dated from before the release of Win8.1 (Oct 2013) to ensure that you have the latest, Win8.1 compatible versions.

Finally, when having BSOD's, it's not advisable to be using beta drivers. They haven't been proven stable yet, so they may contain problems (which, FWIW, could easily be the cause of the BSOD's)
Please remove the beta drivers completely and install the latest, Win8.1 compatible WHQL certified ATI drivers.

Yup. Latest beta AMD drivers are shady (performance-wise) anyway.

Overclocking is very much likely cause of AMD driver crash.

Sunbelt is very much likely cause of network crash.

Thanks for your replies. The problem I am having is when I search for iaStorA.sys and some of the others I am not finding any information on what they are. Therefore, I haven o clue what driver to install. Could you guys please let me which ones need updated and where I can find the driver downloads please?

@ usasma - I was able to find the SecureBoot feature in my BIOS. I also found a post from another guy on another website who has some of the same questions as me about it. The post is here. I will read through it and use it the next time I install Windows. Is that the only thing I need to enable before reinstalling Windows 8 or is there other changes I should make besides disabling the overclocking etc?

@ MasterCheif - There is no overclocking at all enabled on my ATI HD7970's. The cards I have are Sapphire HD7970's OC with Boost. They have two BIOS's which can be changed by moving a switch for BIOS 1 and BIOS 2. I am using BIOS 1 which is the default clocks with no overclocking. All voltages are also set to the default for the video cards. Therefore, I think it was just a driver crash. Also my understanding of what usasma posted it was just the ATI driver that crashed and not the network but I could be wrong.

I have one more question. My Windows 8 x64 disk is a OEM disk. Is there anyway I can download a Windows 8.1 x64 disk to install from? That way I don't have to go into Windows download all the Windows updates then install Windows 8.1 too? Its a lot of downloading on a slow internet connection.

Overclocking of bus speed + cpu = BSOD involving AMD driver (not driver fault - your fault/hardware fault)

I advise to follow what we say, so we don't have to waste time explaining further.

Once you've done everything to a tee that we've said, then and only then is it sufficient to post new crash dumps if necessary (it won't be.)

You can keep your overclock and Sunbelt, but knowing Usasma well online over many years and knowing myself, we aren't going to bother helping like that because neither of us enjoys unnecessarily pulling teeth (and unnecessarily repeating the same thing over and over) to fix something so trivial.

I am disabling the overclocking and uninstall Sunbelt. I don't know where you got the impression that I wasn't. What I am trying to figure out now is where to get the drivers for the things I need to update. Then after that I am trying to figure out this installing Windows 8 using UEFI and SecureBoot.

I also read that my video cards do not support UEFI GOP so using SecureBoot and UEFI will not work from what I read. I could be wrong though. I know nothing about this stuff.

Ummm yeah I was just stating the video card was not overclocked. I had no clue that the CPU being overclocked could cause the video card driver to crash. The only thing I was trying to get across was that the video cards are not overclocked. Then you jumped to the conclusion that I wasn't going to disable my CPU overclocks. What it comes down to is if you don't want to help me then don't. If you do then great. However, I am doing everything you guys suggested.

This website has all the latest drivers for my motherboard. I am going to go through and download them all and install them. As I mentioned I have removed the overclock on my CPU, removed the beta video card driver and went with the latest stable release for Windows 8.1 x64, I have removed GFI (Sunbelt) Vipre Internet Security, and Updated the Realtek drivers. I believe that was everything that was suggested so far. Still would like to figure out more information on using UEFI and SecureBoot. Also, I would like to know if there is a way to install Windows 8.1x64 straight to my PC without having to install Windows 8 first and all the Windows Updates?

I can tell you like this: If there is a will, there is a way. We cannot discuss that on this site and if you find whatever it is you're looking for, you are taking a slight risk of it being laced with malware. It's all about trusting who you get it from or not.

It's not necessary to re-install Windows for any reason here.

I just got done installing all the updated drivers. It has been stable for the last 10 or so minutes. I will keep and eye on things and report back with any issues.

I'm not looking for an illegal way to do it. I don't trust downloading stuff from unknown sources or illegally anyways. I just figured maybe Microsoft had an ISO available with at least the Windows 8.1 update on it. I know sometimes you can get legit ISO's from MSDN and Digital River I think their called.

Yeah, I wasn't going to go through the hassle of reinstalling everything. I was just trying to get my ducks in a row for the next time I decide to do a clean install. Could I use like the PC Refresh option I think its called? Would that allow me to keep the Windows 8.1 update without having to install all the Windows Updates and Windows 8.1 from scratch?

You'll have to read the motherboard's manual before enabling UEFI and SecureBoot.

It is best to get your drivers from known sources (such as the device manufacturer or the motherboard manufacturer). I am not familiar with the Station-Drivers link that you've cited - but I don't think it's related to the motherboard or it's devices. You've expressed concern about unknown links - and I regard this as much more dangerous than using the AsRock link (which I've provided below) - and it's why I try to only provide device manufacturer links in the DRT (Driver Reference Table).

If you click on the links I provided for each driver, it'll take you to my website (the Driver Reference Table) where I do my best to provide descriptions and links to the latest updates from the device manufacturer.

Sometimes (if your motherboard supports Win8.1) it's easier to get the 8.1 compatible drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's website. Here's the link to the model in your profile: ASRock > Z77 Extreme6 Although these aren't necessarily the latest drivers, you'll know that they are most likely compatible with 8.1 and your motherboard.

Again I'll use the example of iaStorA.sys - it's a component of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology utility/drivers (from the Driver Reference Table link here: Driver Reference Table - iaStorA.sys ).
Look down the list at the motherboard link that I posted previously and you'll see that AsRock offers the driver there as being compatible with Win8.1
Take it slowly and carefully and ask questions as needed - you'll find that you can figure these out one-by-one.

There are 8.1 disks available, but I haven't found that you can use them to install 8.1 using your 8 product key.
There are also update disks available - but I question the reliability of them also.

Our diagnostics/testing methods are based on a standard system without tweaks/overclocks/hacks/etc
Tweaks/overclocks/hacks/etc make the system function differently than intended.
They also have a higher than normal failure/crash rate
Removing these tweaks/overclocks/hacks/etc is TEMPORARY - feel free to resume them once the BSOD's have been fixed.

Finally, there is only one memory dump that we've seen - and we're basing a lot of this from your discussion of the problem.
For example, you have pointed out that you overclock the system - yet the lone memory dump doesn't show this overclock.
The more data we have, the easier it is to reach a diagnosis that points at the core problem(s)

Thanks for your replies and help fellas. Here is an update on what has happened. Yesterday while I was trying to install the latest drivers for my devices I ran into an issue with the Realtek High Definition Audio driver. It would not let me install it. It kept crashing. Then, I tried to remove it from the control panel first before installing the updated driver but when I tried running the uninstaller it crashed as well. I tried everything but could not figure out what was causing it to happen. I had a backup image that I made a few days earlier so I restored the backup image. Even after reverting to the backup image I had the same exact problem!

I decided to just load the BIOS defaults (removing the CPU overclock) and reinstall Windows for scratch. I enabled SecureBoot in the BIOS which is disabled by default. The tab in my BIOS made it look like this was just a way to password protect the BIOS which is why I never used it in the past. Anyways, I enabled SecureBoot and selected the "Install Default Boot Keys" option. I fallowed the guides in this post on another forum which I linked to in one of my previous posts. After loading the factory defaults and enabling SecureBoot I put in the Windows 8 disc and pressed F11 to go into the boot menu. From there I booted the Windows 8 disc from the UEFI DVD drive. After formatting and deleting the partitions on the drives I noticed that it created the correct partitions on my C: drive for UEFI so I'm almost positive I did it correctly.

Now I am booted into Windows 8. I do not seam to have any problems with my video cards at all so I'm not sure where people got the idea that Sapphire 7950's and 7970's do not support UEFI. Unless they have since corrected the issue. Anyways I know for a fact they are working because I disabled the Intel video on my I7 3770k in the BIOS. So far I have downloaded all the Windows updates and installed Windows 8.1 that is it. I am going to take my time and track down the latest drivers and make sure they are all Windows 8.1 compatible and released after the release of Windows 8.1 now. Also, I am going to wait to install my antivirus suite until after I make sure the system is completely stable as you guys have suggested.

usasma, the reason why my PC only had one memory dump was because that was the only time my PC had crashed since the last time I reformatted. It seamed to be perfectly stable except for the beta video driver or whatever it was that caused the crash. This time instead of using the beta drivers for my Sapphire 7970's I am going to use the latest stable drivers as you guys have suggested. I also noticed for some reason the overclocks where not showing up in the diagnostics software. It was saying the CPU was running at the factory default speed. However, my CPU was definitely overclocked because when I looked in the BIOS it was set to "All Cores" 45/100 = 4,500MHz. Therefore, I'm not sure what that happened. However, as I have mentioned all overclocks are now removed and I am running the UEFI defaults. As you suggested I am going to take it slow to make sure everything is working correctly. After I get all the drivers installed should I run the diagnostics software again so we can make sure all the drivers are Windows 8.1 compatible? Thanks again for all your help. Ahhh okay thanks for the information.

Hmmm the High Definition Audio Bus is disabled again. I think its the audio on the second video card being disabled since there is nothing being plugged into it. As soon as I install the video card and the Realtek audio drivers it happens. I found a post about another person having this problem. It can be found here. It seams to be related to something called ULPS (Ultra Low Power State) and the issue happens with crossfire video cards. This page seams to have a fix for it.

I was able to go through and find the latest drivers for all my devices. I found some newer drivers for some of the devices that I downloaded directly from the device manufacturers. Some of the ASRock ones where newer and some of the Windows default drivers where the newest. For example the Etron driver for my USB 3.0 ports the Windows driver is newer than the one on the Etron site and station drivers. The Windows driver is dated 1/7/2014. Where as the Etron and Station Driver is dated before Oct of 2013. I can't seam to find a driver for my Broadcom Netlink NIC newer than 7/2013. The Broadcom driver on the ASRock page tries to say its version 16.2.4.1 but when I install it the driver is the same version and date as the latest one on the Broadcom site and Station Drivers page. Therefore, there doesn't seam to be a truly compatible Widnows 8.1 x64 Broadcom driver for my motherboard.
