Windows 8.1 users: It's time to move to Windows 8.1 Update

As of tomorrow, April 8, all Windows 8.1 users will be able to move to Windows 8.1 Update.

Microsoft will be making the Update -- formerly known by those of us who've been tracking it for a while now as "Update 1" and/or "Spring Update" -- available via Windows Update.

The Update, designed primarily to make Windows 8 more palatable for mouse/keyboard users, will be designated as an "Important" security update when it's rolled out tomorrow. It's actually very important, as Microsoft is going to require all Windows 8.1 users to have Windows 8.1 Update installed if they plan to continue to download any security or feature updates to the operating system.

I just installed those updates. They seem a little small for such an anticipated update to the OS. Are these the right update files?

Yes, they were provided through windows update. 31mb just seems a little lacking for an update that was receiving so much attention.


Edit: Hold on a second.... now there's a new update that's nearly 900mb. That's more what I was expecting.

OK all i just got it and it boots directly to the desktop by default know the way MS set it up i don't like that i hate it i like my start menu how do i change it back is there a way to do that??. This is the new one i just got today from ms that configured it like this.

Those don't include the 8.1.1 update; those look like the normal Tuesday type updates. The 8.1.1 came about an hour later, right at noon Seattle time.

Right click on the taskbar, select properties, then navigation and then pick your choice on Start Screen.

Strange, I uncheck the go to desktop instead start, apply, OK, restart and my system comes up with the start screen. I do not have a touch screen although I did once have a touchpad installed.

it worked took some playing around with but it worked but one thing i notes is it loads quicker to the desktop so maybe i just leave it like that, and hit the windows button on the KYB.

I went back to 8.1.0 (system restore)
lost network acces to my nas with 8.1.1
