Solved Windows 8.1 upgrade

Hi Larry
I have the free version so someone is asking that resembles me as I cannot use the forum with the free Macrium.

If you are asking about verification I can only offer a suggestion;
click on restore tab then you should see your image selections and at the right it should say verify, delete, etc. let me know if that helps.

Works as advertised! just did it and yes it does work and same screen as you see in the boot process.
I wanted the forums and the support and the price was right so I purchased the standard version.

Could you ask the forum if the WinPE disc will work with both my older BIOS system as well as the newer UEFI?
In other words, should I make the WinPE disc for my older BIOS now and for the newer UEFI when I get it?
One disc for both or keep my Linux until I actually have the UEFI machine.
I would really love to get that answer.
Thank you
Peter

Hi Larry
I burned the WinPE 4.0 WADIK 64 bit disc.
1-Can it be used to recover older BIOS and also UEFI?
2-What can I expect when I insert this disc? Do I boot from F12 again to open the disc
Thanks
Peter

1) WinPE x64 can be used with Legacy BIOS or UEFI/BIOS firmware.

2) Boot the WinPE x64 from One Time Boot Menu. (your's F12)

3) WinPE x64 will boot to the Windows 8 blue flag.

4) Than to the software app.

Peter2 have you ever tried the windows 7 backup and recovery that is in the control panel? I just did the whole thing from backup to creating the image file to creating the rescue dvd. boots the same steps as I do with Macrium but from there you better know how some of the options in 8 get you to starting the restore.
Macrium is much simpler.
Larry

Hi Larry
I am very happy for you. You must have the older BIOS not the UEFI correct?
Congratulations and be secure.
I just verified 2 new images and put one on each of 2 external drives -over protected.
I ran sfc 1st and found some corrupted files which dism fixed.

Yes I have used that feature when I had Win 7 and now I have Win 8. If you do Win image with Win 8 it is no longer as easy as with Win 7 nor is the recovery as easy. Stick with Macrium or you will be in for a whole new project.

Yes, but isn't the means of creating them in Win 8 and 8.1 different and harder than Win 7?

Hi Peter2. yes there are more steps and screens. I have seen those screens before so I knew what I was looking for. Macrium is much easier to follow. the time to do each one is about the same. I need to learn now about backing up and restoring files and folders in Macrium as in the windows one it was pretty simple especially identifying single files. Larry

Peter2 I would not say harder. yes perhaps more steps but the end results are the same.
the suggestions and instructions posted here by theog and the detailed instructions and display
that Brink put together is really outstanding. I like to try as many of them as I can to learn from.
this time after re installing I have tried to everything using the start menu and apps. so far I am
comfortable with it. I have used HP Quickstart Pokki and modern8 and one other program to keep
things like windows 7 but really I don't have a urge to go back to any of them.

Win 8 recovery

Theog and larry
Perhaps you can help me out.
I am all set with Macrium and the WinPE disc. I also have finally understood the way to disable secure boot and launch CMA. So I can use the disc as I did with the old BIOS or use UEFI with the enabled and disabled (or legacy).

I could swear I read where the new UEFI machine takes away the older way of backing up and recovering. All I saw was a lot of command prompts.

I agree Win 7 and 8 can create and recover the image but seem to read that UEFI changes all that.

I don't have the newer UEFI so will have to wait to tinker.

Please advise me so I am not disillusioned.
Thank you

PS Ask Theog if you can obtain your files and folders with Macrium as I can. No need to learn the UEFI Win image and recover with its difficulties.
Peter

Peter2 I can only speak for what I am doing with the system I have. I no nothing of the past because this the first time I have tried image creation and restore. With Macrium I have the steps that I take and they work for me.
As to windows back up and restore I can do it also. I have created the rescue dvd that they offer in one of the links.
theog I believe said that I don't need it.
I see that when you run backup and restore it offers the option on the screen I think to do an image restore. this leads me to believe if I do it that it will go into a restart and come up with restore the image file or backups.
that being the case then you would not have to use a rescue cd.
I know that is not the answer you are looking for but that is why I was having trouble following what you were giving me. I learned a lot from all that you wrote me however I know very little about windows 7 or even vista as I never tried these things when I used them.

Software that uses WinPE4, there is NO need to mess around in the UEFI/BIOS firmware, you could BRICK your PC.

Don't worry about misunderstandings as they occur easily when typing and not talking.
We are all trying to learn. I understand you have no prior knowledge like Vista etc. As I told you, I am a relative novice like you as I have been doing forums for about 10 years.
I have had Win XP, then Win 7 and now Win 8.
I am on the same page as you as we are only trying to figure things out and people like theog are also trying to answer them. No hard feelings just mistakes but not on purpose. We are all trying to learn and it is not easy. Every one had to start somewhere and it is nice when you get patient support. Everything will work out. As far as files and folders go, I can locate any of them either in Computer or in Macrium. Just unmounts something you may mount. I think mounting makes it easier to view with Windows.
Anyway see if you can find a folder in Computer or Macrium and let me know. I will be looking to why I thought it was now difficult with Win 8 machines with UEFI to image with Windows and recover with the same.
Peter :)
