Windows 8.1 Update 1: Everything we know so far

With the next update to Windows 8.1, Microsoft really wants mouse-and-keyboard users to feel comfortable with modern apps.

We now have a good sense of what to expect in Windows 8.1 Update 1, thanks to a series of leaks from Win8China and reliable Russian blogger WZor, along with reporting by Paul Thurrott and ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, two writers with a strong track record for breaking early Windows news.

It ain't gonna make much difference to me, as most app won't open for me anyway, as I have UAC turned off, and that simply is a deal breaker.

I don't really care about pinning apps to taksbar, but I do care about color of the apps on the Start screen - let me make them all the same color and get rid of the brilliant colors some idiot selected for default colors of apps.

It's not UAC then, I've heard other reports that Apps won't work if you don't have a live ID and log in with a Local account. That's why I asked.

Ah. That's two no-nos. If you disable the UAC, you lose Metro functionality. Ditto with no live ID. Just curiosity, but, whats you problem with signing in with a live ID?

The source says, "complaints that these apps are cumbersome to use without a touch screen." Maybe I'm missing something but I can't see what is cumbersome about it. What's the problem with pointing to them and clicking. Is there something that I'm not understanding?

That goes for me. I don't think I have anything on my computer that would interest MS anyway. I am one in several million. Only fear, I would envisage, some may have is if, of course, they are using pirated MS software.

As you said, Live is good if you have more than one Win 8 PC. As pointed out earlier, I like and use SkyDrive as it makes my life easier when working at school on the laptop, and than being able to access those files on my desktop at home without breaking out the laptop. And vice versa from desktop to laptop. Plus it makes Office 365 a lot easier to share and use. Additionally you can have your e-mail sync'd to Windows 8 mailbox.

With the Live account incorporated in 8, it just makes things a little more convenient across the board in my opinion.

BTW I'm wondering how many people have Google accounts or Smartphones? They aren't any more secure or safer than a Live account. But, hey... Live is a "Microsoft" product so... :sarc:

Meanwhile Google continues to be scrutinized for their personal information collection tactics. And let's not forget about the other social media programs out there.

Left click, instead of right....

I don't know if anyone has thought about this but most people's natural instinct is to left click an item for use. In this instance, left clicking the Start button on 8.1 brings up the Start screen. This gets me every time and annoys the heck out of me when I'm intending to log off or shutdown.

That said, kind of wish Microsoft made it where left clicking the Start button brings up the options menu where we can easily Logoff, Sleep, or Shutdown the PC.

Which made me think of the proposed Close button, situated on... the Start Screen. Seems to me Microsoft has clearly made the Start Screen their highlight page. Maybe there is some truth to the "rumor" that the screen may become an advertising billboard

Just a thought

I have a shutdown shortcut pined to my taskbar and Start Screen. It's just one click to shutdown. I'm happy with the Start Button working the way it does. I use it to launch the Start Menu more than anything else.
