Hi there
USB3 seems sometimes to be a bit flakey on W8.1 -- the speed inexplicably drops quite considerably until the system is re-booted and then the drive works at full speed again. (External USB 3 drive on a laptop with dedicated USB3 slot)
No viruses or malware -- just seems to happen randomly. Ms needs to get some proper Native USB3 drivers in place for W8.1 --
This has happened on both an ACER and an HP laptop so it doesn't seem to be specific to a particular laptop brand.
