Windows 7 vs. Windows 8.1: Users Mixed on Which One Is Bet

We asked, you answered. ‘Is Windows 8 really that awful?’ was the question that stirred up so many controversies last week, pretty much because opinions are still divided on Microsoft’s modern operating system.

Ever since it got to see daylight in October 2012, Windows 8 continuously had to face never-ending waves of criticism, mostly because of the many changes it brings to the IT world.

We decided to simply hear it from you, so we asked whether Windows 8 is indeed a bad operating system and everyone should stick to Windows 7 or move all computers to the new release featuring a Start screen.

Users who posted answers to our questions have pretty mixed thoughts on Windows 8, which is probably the only viable reason behind the current 10 percent market share that the modern OS launched by Microsoft currently has on the desktop.

We’ve read all your comments and here are a few that seem to reflect the way people actually see Windows 8 these days

Yea, even I would think that 98% is high.... although were I to pull a number out of the air, I'd say at least 50% use a classic shell type thingy.

And that really has to screw with 8's overall numbers, as ya can't really say an 8 user who uses classic shell is truly using 8.(did I say that right..??)

Steven Sinofski and his team who designed W8 did pay the price. They're gone. And 8.1 brought us closer to W7 by having the OPTION of booting to desktop, and a Start Button back. 8.2 (W9 now) stands to do more of the same with OPTIONAL Start Menu and using modern apps in the desktop environment a la Modern Mix.

this "debate" is becoming tedious

Look, it's a personal choice, just use the set up you feel most comfortable with.
My personal preference has changed from 7 to 8.1 BUT, only with the caveat that StartIsBack is installed. I have a local account and don't want to use or see the Microsoft store, any of their "apps" or their Fisher-Price, pre-school graphics.

I've moved on from Win 7. To me it now feels almost as antique as Win XP.
Win 8 for me and no regrets.

Many have moved on from win8 x to win 7.

Sadly for MS quite a few have moved on from win8x to non microsoft products.

Raises hand.

This is the first time that I ever refuse to run the latest and "greatest" MS OS on any machine. I was even a true sucker for WinME.

Start Screen is not terrible. It just should be an application that can be ran from the desktop, just like you run any other application.
If you don't want to run it, then don't. That would work the best, but we know why things are as they are.

Should not be tied into explorer.exe.

It must be tied to explorer.exe for these to work.

As the title states, there are mixed views on which one is better.
