Don't take this the wrong way, but how many average users actually use the DISM console? Or even know what it is? It doesn't strike me as something that would make people flock back to 7? Again this not meant as a flame or anything like that, I'm just wondering if I missed something somewhere?

I actually prefer 8.1 over 8.0. I liked the changes they made to Metro. I'm also looking forward to what the next update may bring. That being said, I have no problem with a manufacturer offering up what the buyers want. If HP didn't think they could sell 7 they wouldn't be offering it. It's always nice to have options and a choice.

Alpha - All it took was Brink and David showing me how to run DISM online properly - And I have shown at least 4 other guys - And last I saw, THOSE guys were showing DISM to at least 4 mreo other guys, so word about how easy DISM is in Windows 8 is spreading like wildfire.

Also, I tell newbies in HERE about it and in a lot of cases it fixes their problems. Not all the time, I'd say 8 out of ten times.

I installed 8.1, and was not impressed with it one bit. I don't like the changes at all, At least in 8, things are mainly in the same place they were in Vista and 7- And I can set up "My Computer" to show my drives by TYPE of Drive, 8.1 will not allow that and it cannot be changed.

wonder will this cause a uproar in a few of years ,from the people who take the offer and save 150.00$,when Microsoft discontinues support of win7 .maybe they will then look for a deal on Win9 or 10 ,I know they are likely to advance that date as they do will all windows os's .
its just been announced that Microsoft will keep updates/supporting MSE for winxp for another year

I imagine when support for Windows 7 ends - In 2021, as I have heard, THEN they will move to Windows 8.

I got an email about it awhile back. Since I'm not interested in going back to "slow" it made no difference to me.

Having said that, I'm still using Windows 8 and will wait for "mucho improvements" in Windows 8.1 before I go off into that wilderness again.

7 is FAR from Slow. If configured right and you dont have a lot of crappy programs that run when the PC boots, it can be blazing fast.

8 allows for more of the startup programs, but in 7 (and 8) you can use "Delayed Startup" for most of those resource-hogging services. With the services loading later rather than right at boot, it all evens out.

I always disable ALL startups except AV, my dock and sidebar. No need to have anything start at boot or delayed. They all will start when needed.

My 8.1 is very good starting up, about 10% of the time it took/takes Win 7. There are many small programs available that allow the delay in start up. I can only imagine that those 'puters that are slow in win 8 is because the uses have lots of apps running, probably far too many, and many not even used but 'where there' so loaded. Have a revolution, delete that which you never use or have little use for.

10%? Let's get off the charts quick here and assume your 8 boots in 15 seconds to desktop (to give you benefit of the doubt.)

On the same machine, it takes 2 minutes and 30 seconds for Win7?

by 10% of the time, I meant 10% of the time it USED to boot in Win 7. BUT I am also refering to the time it takes my Win 7 laptop to boot now.

This link shows boot time on a machine for 8 and 7 respectively: 18 sec and 27 sec

18 is ~66.6% of 27.

In simplest terms, advanced users see how Microsoft is wrestling control of the computer away from the user and trying to monetize the previous abilities that they are in the process of taking away. That's one of the biggest complains and most valid, out of many.

In addition, nothing worthy as far as any type of production can be accomplished in any form whatsoever in the Start screen, whether it be music, video, engineering or anything like that at all. It is taking computing and turning it into a tv screen, practically zombifying the masses to tune in to the corporate agenda.

Microsoft does (or did) plan for that to be the only mode of Windows, whether they've officially said that or not. The only thing that has stopped them from progressing with it more than they have has been the huge unheard of backlash that they've received.

Then there are the privacy/security issues (NSA for one, OS phoning home in many brand new ways for another) and the UEFI scam they invented (yes, I know they didn't invent it, but their implementation of it practically did.)

MS have always been trying to control the pc. As far as the programs go, what was free in many cases is now 'pay for' so I didnt bother. I used to like Win Media Center and used it a lot, luckily I got it free with the upgrade from 7; just as well because I am most definitely not paying for what was always part of windows.

As for the format, its made for touch screen, which I will never use pn a pc level, keep it to smart phones.

Not sure what UEFI actually is, not looked it up, to date. As for feedbacks, I gave up trying to contact MS when Titanic sailed, they like google are quite unapproachable.

When a person buys software, as far as I am concerned, it becomes that persons property, if MS want to retain ownership, they should give the purchaser their money back!! Yeah, not going to happen. And the cost for windows is indicative of the monopoly they enjoy. Until someone is prepared to provided a compatitble OS, it will remain expensive. Win is not worth the cost. Linux is not for me.

Dont MS realise that 'cheaper' sells more. Thats why I changed to Win 8, because of the very good offer I got. Having checked Win 8 out for my laptop and the very exorbitant proces, I'll not bother.

PS read the UEFI link, does not sound very nice, quite an infringement if you ask me.

OK, I was just curious. It didn't strike me as something the average Joe would be aware of or concerned with when thinking of buying 8. I see where your coming from though.

It's the other way around for me. I didn't like 8.0 all that much, mostly because of the way Metro worked on multiple monitors. That was fixed in 8.1 and its now my OS or choice. It sounds like some of my other gripes may be fixed in the next update too. I'm looking forward to it to see what they've done.

The continued updates for MSE for XP may be because of "XP Mode" for Windows 7. It may not be the only reason but it probably factors into the decision to continue updates.

Are you referring to the Start Screen or the Modern UI? The Start Screen just launches the application, be it a program or App. In that sense it doesn't really have any impact on production. Production then depends on what program you launched to accomplish the task. If you are talking about the Modern UI then yes, you likely won't get it done with the current Apps that are available. That's what desktop programs are for. Once you launch those your not in the Modern UI anymore so its not a factor. If your running Windows RT your point would be very valid. If your running Windows 8 or 8.1, not so much.

Another one of those numbers drawn out of thin air. I think this performance discussion leads nowhere. I run 7 and 8.1 on different systems and I really do not see any noticable difference in performance. It should be noted though that all my systems run off SSDs.

There is no hate. People just choose what they like best - and the numbers are pretty obvious. Someone who buys a Chevy does not hate Dodge - he just likes Chevy.
