Win8.1 disregards Update settings

Because the full install of all updates results in a BSOD, I want to install them one at a time until I isolate (and fix) the troublesome one. In January it was KB4480963. Since then I have been unable to identify which breaks the PC, because it ignores my SELECTION of updates to download and install. Instead it downloads them all, then includes the damaging one in the installs (and breaks the PC). Is there a remedy for this ? The Windows Update troubleshooter wont start because 'a problem prevents it'.
Knowing to expect trouble, I experiment with updating on a clone, and only when that succeeds, do I accept the updated clone as the 'permanent' system. So I always have an unbroken system to come back to for making a new 'experimental clone'.

Microsoft writes that some known issues in this update already have the workarounds. May it be helpful for you too?
