Will Microsoft keep the Desktop in future Windows Versions

So would we only be able to download apps from the windows store or could we download them from the publishers website?

Either or, but even in Windows 8 and the Windows Store, there are A LOT of Desktop apps available that have been certified for use by Microsoft. Basically, they're not security issues and meet certain requirements. Such Desktop apps that available are the entire collection of Adobe Creative Studio apps. There is also Grand Theft Automobile IV.

When the Desktop gets removed completely, i think someone will make a third party app like DOSbox.
