Why use 3rd party Menus - much more flexible way (W8/8.1)

@ alphanumeric and Mystere

Hotkeys in 8.1 for snapping are WinKey/Arrows. I believe there are hotkeys for monitor focus and of course app focus. Within the multi-monitor scenario, if one wants to rearrange apps to different screens, are there hotkeys to perform that?

@ Mystere

What do you mean by "tiny fraction"? I can snap [ 1/2 ][ 1/2 ] or [1/3][ 2/3 ]. I'm guessing all this depends on screen size and resolution?

Winkey + Arrows are Aero Snap, not Metro Snap.

In 8.1 you can resize a snapped metro app to any size.

? How do you do that?. Maybe, as said, it depends on the size/resolution, of the monitor. I am only offered "Large - Wide - Medium Small" ?

Sorry. Was that for me? I don't have a black bar. How does this control the "to any size", options?

You are thinking about the size of the tiles (large, wide, medium, small). djsigma is talking about when you have 2 apps open on one monitor (mail and IE for example). They start taking half the screen each but you can slide the black bar left and right as you like.

In 8.1 you can resize a snapped metro app to any size.

Again I would beg to differ with you, MysterE=mc². :p

Firstly, for introductory informational purposes, I discovered recently that in 8 Pro RTM the Desktop Aero snap hotkeys continued to be WnKey/Arrows, while the Modern/Metro hotkeys are WinKey/> (lesser than symbol) keys. Furthermore, I dual boot with 8.1 RP, whereas I believe you have 8.1 Pro RTM, so therefore features and hotkeys may have changed in that edition. My Modern/Metro App snap hotkeys in 8.1 Pro RP are WinKey/Arrows. I'm thinking they changed them to match Desktop Aero Snap.

Aero Snap is a desktop feature program. It was introduced in 7 and remains within the desktop UI of 8 and 8.1. Modern/Metro App snap in 8 and 8.1 is totally different animal, although similar. It is a Modern/Metro UI feature designed essentially for touch, although as you know it works well with mouse and keyboard. It has a black line/partition in between the apps that can be manipulated to designated sizes > The desktop Aero snap does not have a line/partition, can be snapped with hotkeys to [1/2][1/2], and then can only be adjusted to various sizes with the mouse by grabbing borders. Since the Desktop is now treated as an app, it can be snapped next to a Modern/Metro app. In that view one can manipulate the desktop portion with Aero Snap hotkeys to fill it's portion or mouse for various sizes.

Desktop Aero snap with no line.

It may be different in 8.1 RTM vs RP, but how do you get the Store apps to snap at any size? I can only get the [1/4][3/4] as shown in the middle screenshot above and [1/2][1/2] as shown below.

I see. Then your post wasn't really relevant for me, I guess. Mystere referred to the size of the snapped apps, not the snapped windows. I suppose I misunderstood the term used.

Yep, it is. You can slide black bar left and right on Metro apps with the mouse like on desktop. There is no fixed 1/3, 1/2 etc

Edit: it snaps with :winkey: Arrow to half/half. You can then drag the black bar with the mouse.

I'd quote your post, but I think it would be quite a mess, especially since I've been editing my post.

Thanks for the info. :)

When you slide it, does both apps size at the same time? That part is not like the desktop Aero Snap where one has to size each window separately?

I'm out too - lol. I was still thinking the thread title. I was focused on Icon sizes in menus, not multiple monitors.

If does both at once. The last print was the smallest I could make it (perhaps my resolution?) but all the intermediary ones are not fixed to certain proportions.
