Just had my first BSOD when restarting (caused by attached external drive I think).

It's pretty damn low res. Looked very blurry :(

That's odd... mine seemed pretty hi res (720p). Heh.
It was when I installed onto a new laptop today but didn't install the network driver properly... I have since learned to get my drivers from Windows Update...

Odd. I could barely read the error on mine

Hopefully I don't plan on seeing too many more for it to be an issue.

Alpha quality goodness :)

Yeah, mine wasn't exactly very specific, but that was the first thing I did, so I clearly knew where I went wrong.
And yes, let's hope we don't see many more. XD

It would be nice - but sadly I doubt it.

Bluescreens are destined to remain mysterious for quite some time yet

Yes, and in hindsight, it's very difficult to report a sudden system crash... well, unless your operating system is sentient, but I don't think Windows 8 has got that far... yet.

It's not easy to provide lot of information through the BSOD screen that's why they capture those in dump files but one thing I wonder is why does it make it so hard to troubleshoot for an average user. Maybe they might improve in future but I don' think it would happen anytime soon.

Somewhere about win 12 they might come up with something more quantitative and easier for the average user to self diagnose. I am not holding my breath.

Thankfully some (most?) BSOD'S dont need the reboot to write the DMP file.

I am waiting for the symbol set to get fleshed out.

Shyam & Ken,

"Average users" will probably never cope.
The "Bell Curve" will always be with us.
Some will just "not understand"
Self diagnosis won't work in these cases.

We really need the DMP files created when the system crashes as they are the only source of information as to what drivers were loaded and what happened just prior to the crash.
Without them we can only give educated generic help.

If you are experiencing "BSOD'S" or Blue screens of death please follow these instructions to find and upload the information we need to find the cause of the problem.

If you can boot normally do so and go here to download Capt.Jack.Sparrows great data collection app. Windows 8 Log Collector

If you cant boot normally try booting into safe mode with networking (F8).
If successful also download Capt.Jack.Sparrows collection app.

After downloading it, please run it as admin (elevated privileges) and click the get all button.

When finished compress (ZIP) the file and upload it to us here.

Please provide any other info (ie system specs, when the crashes occur, etc.) that might be useful too.

Remember > It is much easier to find patterns, etc, when there is more than one crash.

We prefer you wait until you have at least two so that if one is corrupt the other probably wont be.
