Where are Win 8 updates stored?

You need to set Windows update to 'Download updates and let me choose whether to install them' then you can back up the folder (preferably the entire SoftwareDistribution folder) and restore it later. If you install the updates, any updates installed will be automatically removed.

No, they will not be removed. After all updates installed, you would have to manually remove them or run "cleanmgr" to remove them.

This approach might work. However, the updates downloaded will contain a long hex number as a folder or filename. How would you identify which one is which ?

IMHO, a better approach to this is to go to this website below:
Windows Updates Downloader (WUD)
to download the needed updates (usually in the format KBxxxxxxx.msu) and save them to anywhere you want then double click to run the updates manually. If you have more than one PC's then you can use to install in all of them.

I didn't know this existed, thanks Topgundcp! Especially handy for someone like me who has capped monthly download allowance.

Its stored in "C:/$Windows.~BT" and its hidden!
There will be a setup.exe in $Windows.~BT folder, use it to update windows 8 to windows 8.1! Dont forget to update your OS completely before installing windows 8.1!
