What problem does Windows 8 solve?

Summary: Windows 8 is intended to be Microsoft’s platform that does everything for everyone. The problem is it doesn’t solve anyone’s problems, so who will need it?

As Microsoft gets Windows 8 ready for the Consumer Preview coming shortly I am spending a lot of time thinking about the next OS from Redmond. There is a lot to consider given its multiple personalities. It’s a desktop OS, mobile OS, tablet OS, and touch OS all rolled into one. Rather, all rolled into multiple SKUs depending on the hardware involved. I admit to feeling more uneasy about Windows 8 the more I consider what problem(s) it intends to address. Fact is I just don’t see any.

(In case it isn't already clear, I'm a recently graduated attorney).

Must...not...tell...lawyer...joke...
Good idea. Perry Mason there might sue you.

:roflmao:

Lol

In person, I can sniff out a forthcoming dead lawyer (you've heard them, they've got morals like 'the only good lawyer is one who's been backed over with a tractor trailer a few times') or Mexican joke well before the perpetrator manages to say anything I won't be able to forgive him for. It's not my fault I don't look like one nor the other. ;)

It just lights up my day to see the look of relief mixed with apprehension on a person's face when they say "So three lawyers/Mexicans walk into a bar..." And I say, "Really? I'm a lawyer/Mexican." And they realize that I saved them the trouble of looking like an absolute ****er.

As for suing people, that sounds like less fun than averting lawyer jokes ;)

**Edit: A word I chose got starred out there. I'm not usually rude on forums but my British husband explains that the word I chose (which I thought was fairly innocuous) is actually fairly rude. Sorry about that.**

The question should be asked, "What does ANY new version of Windows really solve?" Can't we just keep xp with better performance or security, or even vista for that matter, or even 7?

XP have better security ?

Simply, no, even assuming SP3. XP does not have an antivirus installed by default like Windows 8 does. It also does not have UAC.

Maybe Ford should have kept the Tin Lizzy. Then we would not need that many roads. LOL

Coke, you're raising a valid point. By the time XP arrived (and some people believe it was earlier than that) Windows did everything that most people wanted. If you kept your XP AV updated, 7 provided little more than better visuals. New versions aren't really solving problems, but they are making improvements. Speed, memory, and storage have improved to the point of better programs. And as criinal activity has improved, security has to improve as well.

And what about not having to run after drivers like in XP. Many improvements are in the 'comfort' area and people do not seem to appreciate that.
