What do you want/expect from future versions of Windows?

It boggles the mind why anybody would chose to do something with just one click when they can do it with three, or four or five.

Just to continue ... there is a theory about Windows that shutting down is a low priority.
In Server, one has to give an explanation as to why you want to shut down :p.
You can cancel the inquiry, but there it is.

As far as clicks go, they don't bother me (or boggle)
because it might be a typical day that I click thousands a day.

s1.jpg

And this is still Windows NT, you know, NT6+,
so standard procedure has always been Ctrl + Alt + Del.

Why all this talk of a power button? If you turn your computer on with a physical power button (switch), why can't you turn it off that way?

I posted that I would like to see a shutdown tile on the Start Screen and that started a side topic. I suffer from chronic pain, neck shoulders and lower back. I'd rather not reach down to press the power button on my tower if I can help it. A tile would be a one click deal versus the hunt and peck to do it from the charms bar. A shutdown tile just seems to me to be at least one tile that would be useful, that's all.

Ok. I wasn’t directing it at any particular member nor was trying to be demeaning or derogatory. I was more or less just stating a fact. I am sensitive to you and others with handicaps. We grew up with a sister that was so. She has since passed on.

I noticed it was in your list. I’d like to have a tile also. This is a great idea and there should be one by default. Again, perhaps in 8.2.

An actual Shutdown tile would be nice.

This triggered me to think of this; When I get some time I’m going to try and make a tile; Kari’s post #47 here: What would you like to see in Window 9? | Page 3 | Windows 9 Forums

Although now I see mdmd has one on his Start Screen. Probably pinned that from shortcuts listed prior?

Hello HG. I mentioned it as being easier to get to (for most) than creating a virtual machine as suggested by J for installing older systems or systems in a virtual machine (for compatibility).

I never thought the off thingy was hidden or unintuitive

That’s ok. Again, I wasn’t directing it at any particular member. It’s just that this power button issue keeps coming up. What I should have written was “Why all this talk of a power button and shortcuts?” I’m a keyboader, not a mouser. I’ve tried the shortcuts mentioned and assigned keys to them. Problem is that the shortcut has to sit on the desktop or Taskbar. I don’t like clutter there like I had in 7. That’s one of the things I like about this new system. When commanding with key combo it has to open the desktop to fulfill the command, which is another thing I disliked. Fussy budget I am I know, but I like things a certain way. e.g. I like eggnog in my morning coffee this time of year, not cream. :D

Another thing is that I don’t think it wasn’t hidden intentionally or made “unintuitive” in as much as where they moved it to or placed it. It’s that they put it in a new introduced UI menu > Charms Bar. One of the greatest ideas to come along since sliced bread IMO. I think once learned, one will understand the advantages.

But having said that, it depends on ones power button configuration and the location of the PC. If using a laptop, I guess just close the lid. If your tower is buried somewhere, it might be a little difficult to press a physical button. My 50lb PC box power button is set to sleep, so the only way to shut down is the software button.

Yes, it’s about configuration. We all want things our own way. Whatever is easiest individually. I would assume that most people have access to their tower PC physical button.

My system sleeps all day. I need a rest from posting.

Have a nice nap. I think I’m about to take one. :)

Lot's of folks don't get that Windows is Windows NT
and has always traditionally been controlled by Ctrl + Alt + Del

The desktop start menu was essential because people don't know what they are doing.
Geez, server offers an installation without a gui. Just a command prompt.
How many people could handle that?
The Graphical User Interface is necessary for almost everyone.

No problem, I didn't take what you said as demeaning or derogatory. I was just explaining why the thread may have gone of topic.
I just created a shutdown shortcut and put it in my Users/Kerry/Desktop folder. Then I just right click the shortcut and select Pin To Taskbar and Pin To Start. If Sleep or Hybernate is your thing you can customize the shortcut to do those instead of shuting down. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/7025-shut-down-shortcut-create-windows-8-a.html

I'm a retired electronic technician. I modified my tower by adding a momentary push button to the very top most Optical drive bay blank front panel. It is connected to the motherboards power button header. Pressing it will turn the Pc on if its off or turn it off if its on. I can just reach the button with full arm extension saving me from having to lean over. I don't even have to look down to find it.

On my laptop I have the lid close set to Do Nothing, I close the lid when moving from say my back deck to inside or vise versa. I power up with the power button and power down via a shortcut. Different strokes for different folks. :)

In next Windows version I would love to see something other than the "activate windows" for checking forpiracy. As it is now, it is annoying me quite a lot.
Latest example: Last Saturday I flashed a new BIOS incl new Intel ME version onto my mobo. rebooted and then Windows was not activated anymore. It could not activate automatic, so I tried to phone to MS "activating service". After typing the id-numbers I was told, that my ID was not accepted, and it could not be activated!! At saturday there is no way a private can get to talk to a real person. Monday I phoned again to MS and this time I could speak to a real person (I think), and after he looked at it, he asked me a lot of questions about my PC, and what had changed aso. I told him, that I have got a new SSD, a new netcard (onboard is broken), and now this BIOS-update since I installed Windows (clean install), and that's it. Hen sounded as he did not believe me, but he did finally give me new ID-numbers to type, so now my Wondows is activated again. Allthough he was kind to talk to, I don't like the idea, that my system can be grounded so easy.

Please, find another way of tracking legal systems. Please.

Be careful what you ask for, as the next step against piracy could be even more involved and complicated, and maybe even more prone to failure. It's unfortunate that you had activation issues. If you swap a lot of hardware in a short time it can trigger an activation check. I'm not saying that's what you did that's just an example of what can trigger it. I flashed the BIOS on my laptop and had no issues. I also replaced the hard drive with an SSD and upgraded the WIFI card with no issues. They weren't all done at once though. Anyway, I don't see Microsoft relaxing on their activation strategy any time soon.

The 3 tings was done in a spand of about a month, is that "a short time"? Is there a setting or a program that will show you how close you are to trigger this activation check? Evt which item(s) that is replaced since last activation and/or which item(s) can be switched without trigger activation check?

Along with my complaints about the Worthlessness of RT, I add the ridiculous removal of DVD burning.

MS adds all this fancy CACK, thinking that people with STOP having a need for burning DVDs with the Native Burner. Future OS? I wanna see a real start menu put back, and DVD burning put back.

Windows 7 was prefect with these features, you could burn DVD and CD, and Media Center was not some 10 dollar or 99 dollar add on option, it was part of the OS.

So they make an RT interface, while removing native DVD playback from WMP. I don't understand why they removed this stuff, it just doesnt make sense.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.

Licensing would be my guess? That was their excuse for removing Media Center. That or they are just trying to force you to use a Metro Store App to do it. Either way it sucks. :(

An OS that just works straight out of the box! No nonsense of having to cut and paste from another programs or OS to make it work. I do not want to install external programs to make an OS do what I want it to do!

If I install an OS on my laptop or PC I do not expect it to act as if these machines are tablets, they are not!

I don't know, Microsoft doesn't give out very much info on how Activation works or what triggers it. Their thinking is if you don't know how it works you won't know how to cheat it. I do believe Retail installs monitor a lot more hardware than say a factory OEM install. The Activation server keeps a hardware fingerprint of the PC after first activation. It then periodically compares it to the actual PC. If it see's a big change or enough change over a certain period that it suspects you have installed on another PC, you'll fail activation. Changing out the motherboard will trigger it all on its own because it shows up looking like a different PC. Maybe your BIOS update caused Windows to think you installed on a different PC. You can move a Retail install to another PC but you almost always have to activate by phone when you do it. Microsoft wants confirmation that your copy of Windows is only installed on one PC. Hopefully you don't have any more issues with activation.

Sorry but that's not OS what you wish for, it's complete software system. I, on another hand would like to have a clean small OS with usable GUI and than install software and apps I prefer instead of mediocre ones offered at higher cost by MS. Such an OS would be much cheaper and more streamlined and therefore be a real OS instead of hoge- podge of programs that just offer an excuse for price.
