What % do you use the desktop vs. modern UI?

I personally am not surprised at the feedback we are seeing here and I doubt MS would be surprised either.

Metro apps don't offer any advantage to a computer with a mouse and keyboard but on a tablet with no mouse or keyboard then Metro apps start to become easier to use while traditional desktop apps with their cascading menus become more difficult to use.

I'm about 75% desktop - 25% metro.

I've got a 2-in-1, Lenovo Yoga Pro 2.

I'm up to about 20% Desktop 80% Modern/Metro. (100% on my Nokia Lumia 1520) When they port over and release the Modern/Metro Office suite, I’ll be pretty much all Modern/Metro on my tower. Little by little for the last two years I’ve been finding Store apps to replace the Win32 apps. Here’s the first two pages of my Start Screen to show how much so. Notice I have 2 OneNote tiles > One Win32 and one Modern/Metro. Just about finished learning the Modern/Metro one, so I’ll dump the Win32.






Quite honestly I feel some haven’t used or used very little of the Store apps to justify posting fair statements concerning them. Admittedly they were not very good at first, but they have come along quite nicely through updates and additions. Tons more added this past year to the Store also.

Anything performed in a Win32 app can be performed in the Store apps with much more efficiency and speed. And > All work just as efficient with mouse and keyboard.

Hi there

You CAN actually install those games from Windows 7 - they work fine and are standard Windows apps ( Re-sizeable windows and not Metro) if you play these things. (Classic Windows 7 games). You need a W7 disk to install though. I prefer these to the Metro versins -- also can play these while doing other things at the same time - and hide of course if the Boss appears. !!

Here's Spider Solitaire from Win 7 on W8.1 -- I like Hearts too.

One can obtain the collection for free (pay-for version optional) within Xbox games.



One hasn’t lived until one tries that collection. Sweet!

They are just apps, it does not matter if you click or tap on them to start them.

That is a very narrow view of using either a desktop or Metro app, how they are started is pretty much irrelevant in this discussion. Do you only start apps but don't actually use them? An app that is optimized for touch is much easier to use on a touch-only device, such as my Surface Pro 3 tablet, than a traditional desktop app.

Problem is if you want to concurrently run Desktop stuff such as several EXCEL worksheets, a power point presentation and say logon to some ERP SAP systems from a corporate backend you can't really do this as the Metro app takes 1/2 or 1/4 of you screen -- HOPELESS for a business point view.

On my 19 inch monitor I can snap a Store app 1/3 and the Desktop app/portal next to it with 2 windows open comfortably for vision. One can only open 4 desktop apps maximum on 17 to 22 in monitors. Maybe 6 on 24 to 30 and so on. One may as well go multi monitor then.

Agreeably they need to work out the windowing of Store apps, but it will come. Most likely in 9 coming up.

Just wandering, whose "bright" idea was to make Apps windows non-scalable ??? He/she/it single handedly made Apps anything but usable even on tablets let alone desktops. If most desktop programs can be scalable and easily movable on one or more screens, some bright spark decided that it is not good thing. Who needs let's say calculator App on the whole screen, even 1/4 is too much, covers or moves program beneath so entering results is practically impossible.
I have 4 core processor, 8 GB of RAM and 4 HDDs, many have double or more of that and if using only Apps might have saved a lot of money using one core system. That just kills Apps usability and with that developers making more and better Apps which in turn would make them more popular.

Metro Apps you mean ? Only one live tile (weather) used, rest is just a giant Start menu for my desktop applications. Yet to find any useful Apps for which there's no decent desktop program.

Yes. I would make the same query, as there is only one desktop. I use the Metro as my start menu I prefer to go on using my legacy desktop programs, as I have not yet found any advantage in the so-called "Apps". Percentage wise, therefore, I guess it depends how often I need to select something from my start menu. Probably about 1%

I have Windows 8.1 on my 17 inch Dell laptop and on a 12.1 inch Asus B121 tablet. Since each device is used differently there are different ratios.

My laptop I am 95% in the Desktop mode (even has StartIsBack installed to restore the old Start button menu)

O my tablet I am about 70% Metro and 30% Desktop.

My hybrid has a 3200x1800 resolution screen. Most desktop apps don't scale well at this resolution, but on the modern UI, the display is simply awesome.

I use the desktop at 1920x1080 when I need to be productive. About 25% of the time, when I'm just chillin', I fold my machine to tablet mode, and enjoy super high-res QHD on the modern UI

I'm a recent returnee to the Windows world. Been using Macs and Apple products for quite some time with just a low-powered Windows laptop to run PlayOn and Calibre` servers.

Now I've got a Surface Pro (1st gen) and just got an HP 23-N010 touch desktop all-in-one with Beats Audio.

I use mostly Metro apps on the Surface Pro and about a 50-50 split between desktop and Metro on the desktop.
