Previously i had installed windows 10 and 2 days ago i decided to revert back to windows 8.1. I followed the steps as mentioned in this site How To Remove Windows 10 Technical Preview - LoveMySurfaceLoveMySurface. now it says 'unable to reset pc.a required drive partition is missing'.

I used command prompt and disk partition , it says there is no partition to show. Is there any thing i can do.
help needed, thanks!

You have to destroy(delete) all partitions on disk 0 then reformat to NTFS. A good tool is GParted, or if you're experienced with CLI use command prompt in WinPe. Gparted is easier being visual. just go here to find the latest ISO, pick live usb or dvd and burn it. Then boot into it, and then pick all partitions to delete and reformat entire disk to NTFS. When complete shutdown, swap out GParted for recovery media(USB or better system image) and then reboot. p.s a copy of GParted also comes with ubuntu based OS´s.

Thank you Cliff S for you kind information, however i got success in loading the the windows 8.1 ios but in mean time it says 'windows cannot be installed on drive 0 partition 1' windows can only be installed to GPT disk. I tried a lot to convert some space of drive into MBR i got failed, i need your suggestion on this one. :) is there any simple way to convert MBR to GPT. Thank you again for your reply.

I partitioned 20 gb space for OS and its not showing when windows is loading , it just shows disk 0 (298 gb) in command prompt. did i make anything wrong with gparted while partitioning

if something is wrong with BIOS what suggestion you have mate, wanna try that one if possible:)

A couple other questions first...I noticed your disk 0 has two partitions a 20GB and a 277GB what's on them? Are they both empty? And is disk 1 your install media?

From the 2nd screen of your post #3. High light each partition and click on delete. You'll end up with one single unallocated disk 0. Click on next and let windows installation manage the partitions creation then install Windows.

That's excactly where I was headed but needed to know if it was a data disk on the 277GB partition from the last windows installation.

i partitioned disk 0 into 2 , one is around 20 gb and other is 277 gb. but when i try to convert 20 gb space into GPT to install windows there it doesnt show in command prompt, its just shows 298 gb together in disk 0, i dont have anything there as I formatted many times, and yeah disk 1 is install media. i spent whole night trying to fix this one, still not got success :)

OK do what Topguncp said and then you should be good to go.

Data disk ? both partitions contain nothing as seen from the screen shot. 20.5 Free space & 277.4 Free space

@OP,
20 GB is not enough for Windows Installation. Ideally you should reserve 60~80GB for Windows OS and use the rest for data. Just do what I suggest and when done, shrink drive C: to 60GB.

NOTE: To make C drive exactly 60GB, use this: 60 * 1024 = 61440 to shrink.

Quote from this post: UEFI Boot Mode (installing using the GPT partition style) and Legacy BIOS Boot Mode (installing using the MBR partition style). -> link

Tip   Tip
Error message when you boot from the Windows installation media in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode:

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style. (see screenshot below)

That is because Windows can only be installed to MBR disk in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode, but you plan to install Windows on a GPT disk.

- Boot from the Windows installation media in UEFI Boot Mode, so you can use GPT (GUID Partition Table).
- But if you want to use MBR (Master Boot Record) partition table, then delete all partitions on the disk.

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.png

Error message when you boot from the Windows installation media in UEFI Boot Mode:

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. (see screenshot below)

One bit of advice "Just let windows take care of windows", no fancy tweaks or 3rd party software that windows already has, and you should have no more problems, except for the massive update that are coming after the fresh install. Just do them in stages (some need to be installed before others, so windows update can stall sometimes, then just 1. disconnect from internet 2.reeboot 3 and a few at a time and always re start and you should be ok. check what was downloaded and hit install 4. reboot 5. recheck for updates 6. see 1).

The very first thing I'd do is to install the .Net Framework even before running Windows Updates because quite a few software/applications required this package to be installed and to avoid later complication installing it:
  1. Win+X->Programs & Features->Turn on Windows Features on or off. Put a check mark on .NET Framework 3.5 ...., click OK. then reboot Windows
  2. Run Windows Updates. My experience & never have any problem, you don't need to run in stages, no need to turn off Internet connection, just do what it says. If Windows ask you to reboot then reboot. Keep checking for Windows Updates until you'll get a message: No updates are available.
  3. From Disk Management, shrink Drive C: to what ever size you want. As said earlier, 60 ~ 80 GB to be ideal.
  4. Activate Windows if not already done. Make the first backup image using: Macrium Reflect Free

Cliff S thanks mate, will follow what you said, i was having heating problem and fan makes annoying noise when playing video in we browser when i upgraded to windows 10 to test. still its the same problem with windows 8.
