im unable to pin to start any shortcuts from explorer.

ive tried changing the local group policy Remove pinned programs list from the Start Menu to disable and it still doesn't work

When clicking on the down arrow to add existing shortcuts i can. But i have other programs I wish to pin that aren't listed in there.

Any advise regarding restoring the ability to pin programs to the start menu appreciated, cheers

yes i have the pin to start when right clicking on a shortcut or whatever, just nothing adds

Have you already scrolled your Start screen all the way to the right see if the added item may just be out of sight?

Ok, so some are able to pin to start, or are these from before this issue started?

Are there any specific items that will not pin to start?

If this just recently started, then you might see if doing a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this happened may be able to quickly fix it for you.

Your choice, but this isn't the same as a factory restore that starts you back from scratch if that's what you were thinking.

A system restore will only take your system back to how it was at the date and time of the selected restore point. It's perfect for situations like this when you don't know what caused the issue, but know when it started.

Shawn, perhaps this person is struck in a "Temporary Profile" like I was?

Krohm, are all of your Tile Apps gone from the Start Screen? Even if you have not installed any of your own, there should be at least 2 rows of the Built In MS Apps. If your system loaded you into a Temp Profile, you will not be able to add anything, and you will be missing almost everything that is normally on the Start Screen.

The way to know if this is happening, is that as you log in, it will say "Preparing Windows" and it will take Windows 8 up to 5 minutes to load from that point. Then when it logs you in, there will be a Bubble Notification telling you a Temp Profile has been loaded.

Hello Jon,

It's a possibility. I was hoping that Krohm may have a restore point available dated just before this started to hopefully save him a lot of time trying to find the cause to be able to undo it afterwards, and quickly get it done with the restore point instead.

its been like it for a long time,.. im not restoring cause i cant add icons to the start menu. thats ridiculous.

ive just created a shortcut to explorer to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and put my additional apps and shortcuts there if i want to add them.

no it isnt a temp profile

ill format reinstall in a month or two anyways when i go ssd drives

Yeah, for that long ago it wouldn't be worth doing a system restore. It's only helpful if it was for a recent issue.
