My friend is running a cracked version of Windows 8 and he got the "activate windows" watermark on the screen.

He wants to buy a legal copy of windows 8 but he doesn't want to format and reinstall. Basically, he just wants to buy it so the watermark can diseapear.

So is there a way to pay to register a cracked copy of Windows 8 without having to reinstall ? How ?

I know you say this, but I recommend that you reformat and here is why:
A cracked license can give you numerous problems down the road, no matter if it has been legalized or not. You don't want to have to deal with it later, deal with it now. You can backup your files for the new setup. Despite the headache, it is the route I'd choose.

If you don't care about the risk, please say so.

And your friend told you that he wants a legal copy just to get rid of the watermark? :sarc:
 
I agree with you but it's my friend's computer and he really really doesn't want to format. He asked me to find a way to register his copy and legalize it without having to format. Basically he just wants the watermark to diseapear. AFAIK he doesn't have any other problem with the cracked version.

I love how they go "my friend" its always "my friend". Right...

But anyways the only option you have is either get a legit key and activate it with that. If that dont work reformat only option. I guess it wasnt cracked why he is switching. lol:zip:
 
You can do an IN-PLACE install of Windows 8, it has to be the exact same version. All of the files added for cracking it will be removed, from that point you should be able to use "Activate" and buy a legit key. I've done this twice.

I can't go into detail, but the cracks add files to the system. An In-Place install will remove them, cos it flushes out the Windows folder. So just stick a Windows 8 install disk and do an In Place install from the Desktop, and try to activate it, let us know what it does.

cracking causes a huge Black Screen of Deth issue, usually you dont get as far as the desktop to see any messages.

He should be able to call them and buy a key from them, I remember seeing a phone number in there. I don't know if it's still the same though, the Tutorial someone posted a link to looks about right.
 
You can try:
  1. Open the elevated command prompt and run: sfc /scannow --> This should replace all the cracked system files and set Windows back to unactivated status.
  2. Activate it with the new legal key
