Start button to re-appear in Windows Blue (From W7 Forum)

I guess the Windows 8 purists who love the "Modern" interface will say Microsoft has defiled Windows 8 and will boycott Windows 8.

I am an 8 purist but wouldn't say that. I don't care if they put the option in. I would not use it.
If there was a boot to desktop option, I would not enable that either.

There is no chance (WinRT) metro will be eliminated.

I'd consider myself a Windows 8 "purist" as well, and I personally think it was a huge mistake to leave the Start menu out. Not that I'll use it, but it should have been an option for everyone who didn't want the Metro UI. I hope they bring it back for those that want it. Microsoft needs to offer all the options they can.

I would be surprised if they made Aero transparency available again.

There is problem with battery life.

If they make transparency available on laptop/desktops - then tablet users get a second class experience.

Uh oh - the answer is to remove it from both.

Thank you!

Well, there is many third party windows 8 aero themes on deviantart site in example, so go there and download what you like. BTW, windows 8.1 or blue, will be released as new os and there will be no updates in "windows updater", right ?

Well, desktop pcs doesnt bring enough money, even apple for a few years now is concentrating on small tablets (known as phones) and tablets and has almost abandoned desktop macs, so others are trying to do that too. Tablets+phones market is pretty fresh compared to personal computers, and everyone wants a piece of billions of billions of money that is traveling through this market, and everyone wants to make as biggest impact to it as they can, like patents wars, or like microsofts patents, that gets them billions from android without moving a finger :)

Hopefully this is true, but until its (Blue) released, it’s all speculation....

It's not 100 percent sure that either/both of these options will be baked into the final Blue release, which is expected to be released to manufacturing on or around August 2013. I guess we'll have a better indication once the next milestone build, a.k.a. the Blue Preview, leaks — or when the public version of that preview goes live around June.

Desktop doesn't bring in enough money? You are forgetting about the Corp world where we all run our business from desktop machines. Our company has bought about 200 new desktops with another 1,000 on the way. All with windows 7 of course. That isn't including the servers that we have bought. Every priced windows 2012 data center with 8 cores in a VM environment? Windows 8 wasn't aimed at the Corp user but the home user. Most businesses that I know of are downgrading their license to install windows 7. I'm still debating about going to windows 2012 when I set up some new severs later on this month

Hi there

Not sure what your point is here.

Ms OFFICE is the MOST PROFITABLE division. Some corporates have on going Ms Service licenses for DONKEYS YEARS yet for any OS whether it's XP / Win 7 or even "Under the Railway arches". For businesses switching from XP who will certainly choose or are choosing W7 going to W8 isn't even on their radar yet so that's not a real Ms consideration.

W7 will be "The new XP" as even Ms itself has acknowleged. A lot of HUGE ERP back end application stuff such as SAP don't even install on W8 so W7 isn't going away any time soon. OK few home users have to worry about large ERP / CRM systems but that's a CORE function in a lot of businesses.

SAP site -- warning -- a LOT to read if you are interested.

SAP Business Management Software Solutions, Applications and Services | SAP

Ms will provide support even for some Linux servers -- provided you pay for it of course.

While there is an Enterprise W8 version out there I suspect this is more for W8 to go users rather than the real corporate world.

The trouble is with the Fruit Company being caned mercilessly by the Markets Ms doesn't have anybody pushing for the best way to get W8 to work with existing CONSUMERS as well as designing better facilities for mobile device users.

If W8 ceased business tomorrow it probably would dent Ms's stock price by about 0.25c.

Cheers

The problem is Microsoft needs a good OS in order to continue Office sales. If enough consumers reject the OS then the base for selling new versions of Office shrinks.

Agreed - but even here it's in the Corporate world that Office makes the money from. It's acknowleged that Ms Office is the most Pirated piece of Software on Earth - yet the division is still the nr 1 earner for Ms. -- Shows really that Piracy (whatever the legal or moral stance on it) isn't causing big companies to lose revenues as most of those people using their pirate copies wouldn't have bought the software in the first place -- but a few might just buy it after using it for a while. However that line of argument doesn't go down well in "Grey Suited" Corporate America whatever the true statistics reveal.

Cheers

That's true. Microsoft can continue to sell and service Windows 7 beyond tomorrow.
Say 2027, why not... they won't give up on it.

Will they? Or even 2020...
How many versions of Windows will there be in the next 7 years? What new features?

Will the start button exist in Windows 11?

I doubt they will actually do so. There was once a rumored switch between the Release Preview and RTM that allowed boot to the Desktop, but that never happened. A start menu at this point would really undercut everything they have done so far just to provide a temporary crutch from the old to new.

There is no 'old' and 'new'. Its simply two interfaces :p. The mobile and desktop interface. The sooner they realize that, the better. They've tried shoehorning people into using the mobile interface, and its clear they're refusing to go. They can either keep shoveling s**t against the tide, or fix it.

No, it's more old and new. That's what it simply is. The code is such a way that it even defines the Start Screen as a the start menu, it's the same thing but new and different. It's like taking the start menu from Details view to Large Icons view. Are you telling me that icons are a touch only user interface for tablet users?

Aero transparency LITERALLY occupies less than 10 percent of the total Desktop UI. If you are seriously concerned over something so menial as that, I doubt you're doing the Windows thing right, there isn't a focus of the chrome in Windows 8 at all. There shouldn't had been to begin with. You don't go to an art gallery to admire the frames that the pieces of work are in do you? No. Content over chrome. Not chrome over content.

And if they did return the start menu as a hidden option, I ask for the ability to post of every H8er's response to it here as...

I don't really see where Microsoft ends up with too much egg on their face if they bring this menu back. They can say all they want about how nobody wanted it, but the complaints from those who did rang out very loudly.

It's clear that others are completely satisfied with the new 8 interface and even use the new apps. There are those like me, that although on 8 on my new laptop, I spend 99.95% of my time in classic desktop apps. I find the new apps "pretty simplistic". They look pretty, but are a bit on the simplistic side. I pretty much never use them. Having my entire screen consumed is simply not desirable.
