StarDock releases ModernMix for Windows 8

Even on a further note for developers, I'm looking at my taskbar now, I have the gmail touch, google, tunein radio, facebook app, netflix app all pinned and opened. Yesterday these where fiddly tabs on my firefox browser, today these are things that are looking at me in the face ready to go at any time, they simply couldn't be easier to access! In a sense, everything I could ever need is now looking right at me from the task bar. In a certain way, I could delete firefox right now!!

As I said saying 'this is a nice program' completely underestimates it.

This basically is "Windows 8 Service Pack 2"!!!

MS may do those kind of things with Blue - option to boot straight to desktop, New startmeu with their online schemes heavily promoted, and something vaguely similar to ModernMix in the way apps. are handled.

Stardock better make as much as they can now. They done very well out of 8 so far - tens of millions of dollars for their start menu already. Good on them.

To be perfectly honest I expect Microsoft to block third party applications such as Modern Mix and '7 Explorer For 8', ones which specifically workaround their vision for Windows 8

The two are third party but not much alike:
  • Explorer For 8 is a 'hack' using Win7 Explorer and modifications in the registry.
  • Modern Mix uses the Windows API provided for this kind of customization thing in a signed executable.

As long as your program doesn't modify things not allowed to modify (that can distort normal system work) all should work normally.

Stardock: +1

I've recently downloaded trial versions of Start 8, Fences 2.0, Decor 8 and DeskScapes 8 and have to say that they're making my system very cool... and consuming very few resources:

Used RAM include UI + Srv:
-------------------------------------------------------------
Start 8 -> 0,8 MB
DeskScapes 8 -> 18,5 MB (Playing Planktonik Dream)
Decor 8 -> 0,9 MB
Fences 2.0 -> 11,5 MB (Config UI Running)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Total -> 31,7 MB*

Now I have to check that Modern Mix !

*Less than my 5 active gadgets (37,9 MB)

Funny thing is that Windows "Blue" may be bringing some of this stuff back to the desktop. Start key, App shortcuts. Meantime, Stardock has GOT to be making tons of money off of MS missteps.
I am not using Modernmix much after my initial enthusiasm. When faced with a web page dedicated to, say, weather, the app just seems so limited...

Windows Blue will not replace Start8 and will not do what ModernMix does. They are giving the start button back, but simply as a link to the Start Screen, not a menu. As far as ModernMix goes, I love it - but I highly doubt MS will ever implement this as the app are a way to get people into the modern UI. I agree about your webpage comment, and I suggest to Stardock that they incorporate some kind of "borderless" window look to the apps that are open in a window - if that was there - you could keep an app window open and floating on your desktop with it being so obtrusive with the big ugly solid colored window borders. And the apps will get better, if Yahoo makes their weather app into a Win8 app - I'd use it.
