So I use to have ~60gb FREE space on my SSD but then I was experiencing some problems with opening some metro apps so I ran the windows (all in one) fix-it program and luckily enough it did repair my problem although afterward I was only left with ~45gb free space on my 100gb SSD, which is quite strange as I cant find where on earth all this extra data came from and if it is nessercery.

Im not sure if this has anything to do with my problem but their are these partions on my C drive which have no name, which could be causing problems related to availible space?

I will provide more information as needed, thanks.

Edit: I have ran the windows disk cleaner to clean both normal and system files plus I run ccleaner on a regular bases.

Thanks for the quick reply adamf. Here is the requested picture. I notice it says c drive has 37.6gb on it which makes sense with my previous figuers of me previously having ~60gb free space. And yet in the bottom left hand corner it says only 48gb free :dinesh:

Edit: Here is the picture, forgot to attach!

Try to run it as Administrator - there is an option for that. 36 + 48 doesn't equal 100 so something is missing.

You can then click the arrows on the LHS to expand the tree.

Windows looks normal although you can try to reduce it using this tutorial http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/44351-winsxs-folder-component-store-clean-up-windows-8-1-a.html

The files are probably hiberfil.sys (which is hibernation and can be eliminated by entering powercfg -h off from an administrative command prompt) and pagefil.sys (which you could but probaby shouldn't reduce) and some small ones.

The others (program files and games) depends on what you have installed.

I cleaned the component store and I got a message on the command line saying it was successful, although I am still not seeing any reductions in disk space. (I ran the "Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup" command). The cleanup was so quick because I had used it earlier today in an attempt to figure out this problem.

I ran TreeSize as an administrator (plus enabled the always run as admin option within TreeSize) and the results are strangely still not adding up. 38GB on C: and 48GB free of 100GB, where is this 14GB of space?

Hmm. I don't know. I just tried treesize and also WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics and treesize seemed to be inaccurate. In the past is has been the other way around - windirstat shows OneDrive files which are online only as taking full disk space..

You could give windirstat a go and see if it matches unless someone has a better idea.

What SSD is it? i wonder if you just found a bug in that ssd..

unfortunately the next thing would be to reformat it and see if all the space shows back up..

but that requires backing/copying all your data to an external and then doing a "clean" command from diskpart on the correct volume/partition in command prompt and then "quick formatting" the SSD to see if all space shows up again.. then reinstall windows and put your data back..

uh.. seem like an idea for you?
ha.

Hey bassfacer! My SSD is the "AXM14S3-128GM-B" which is part of my Sony Vaio.

Honestly, I would prefer making sure their are no other soloutions to my problem before I perform a SSD reformat as doing so combined with getting windows and all my files back onto this Sony Vaio that has no disk drive will most likely be a bit of a pain for me.

I am also not entirely sure how I go about reinstalling windows 8.1 onto my Sony Vaio as im not sure where the product key is.

Have a look at properties (right click on C:\) and see if it is the same as Treesize/WinDirStat and then compare this to CHKDSK (Administrator command prompt, chkdsk <enter> )

If the properties of C:\ is not the same as chkdisk then something is hiding from you.

If this is the case you could look at these old blogs where the writer found 20GB belonging to an old user.

If you can't see it in explorer, it doesn't get added to the total size

Re-installing is easy btw - your key is embedded so you don't need to enter it. However you would lose your recovery partition and if you image your drive you'll only copy back whatever is taking the space so I'd not go that route yet.

I did a windows reset as it actually did seem pretty easy and I had most of my data backed up externally so it wasn't really a big deal. Explorer is now showing the correct disk usage!
