Screen resolutions for HDMI connections

Hi. Not computer savvy. Sorry if this is not the place but could you direct me where if not here, thanks.
I see resolutions numbers when I plugged in my new laptop HP Windows 8.1 to my new RCA 32 inch flat screen t.v. I kind of know, basically what resolution means. I know by the looks that I must need to change something, I get an orange colour on part of a face and or arm, not with all viewings however. I see some bits of " pixels "I think it's called, sometimes. I am pretty sure I need to correct the resolutions, I have 3 HDMI ports on the t.v. But I cannot find what is compatible.
I am not very good sometimes at explaining my needs. I hope you understand me. Thank you for being there for us.

First of all, is your TV 720p, 1080p or 4K?

If your TV is 720p, use 1280x720 resolution. If it's 1080p, use 1920x1080p output. Finally, if it's 4K, use 3840x2160 resolution. Don't duplicate displays since it'll look bad on the TV. Just use "show only on display 2".

Welcome to EightForums, first i would believe correct question to ask is about your graphics adapter on this laptop, check the device manager under display adapters give us name. Not sure of the resolution quality of graphics card on this. Use a decent quality HDMI cable. Check in control panel under display look for second monitor...see here How to Use HDMI* to Connect Your Laptop to Your TV
