I think this badge thing and rep points is not really needed. the only thing I could see a badge for is to tell the important people of the forums from the members.
All the members are important
Badges and reputation represent something. Ultimately, help provided. Usually without expectations of reward, or recognition. Unselfish giving of ones time and knowledge to benefit fellow members. So while not necessarily needed, it's nice to receive as a "thanks" or "atta boy"
