Remove computer from Windows 8.1 PC workgroup

I have a Windows 8 laptop that I am sharing files on with an iMac computer running Maverick OS 10.9.4. The problem I am having is that I have two iMac computers with the same name, but different passwords....consequently, I can only network to one of them( I found this out too late). Of course I connected to the wrong one to begin with and now I need to know how to remove that one from the Windows 8.1 PC workgroup so I can network the right one. Any ideas??

Try to clear the DNS Cache from the router by disconnect the power cord and leave it out for 5-10' and from the Windows 8.1, open the Admin command prompt and type: ipconfig /flushdns.

BTW, you should not have 2 PC's with the same name

Yes, I know I should not have two computers with the same name, but that happened because the first one (the one I want to connect with was a hand me down iMac to my wife who is into genealogy and has files she wants to share between her new Windows 8.1 laptop and her old iMac)......However, I followed your solution to the letter and the Windows machine returned the message "Cache successfully flushed", but both iMac computers are still in the workgroup and I still can only connect to the one I want to remove but not the wife's........

Is there another way to simply remove my iMac from the workgroup on the Windows 8.1 PC which would leave only my wife's iMac and allow me to connect to it without going through the lengthy process of changing her iMac's computer name????

Please advise......

Thanks for your time......

Wouldn't the simplest solution would be to rename one of the MACS, then again I don't deal with MAC and I don't know how hard it is to change the name of a MAC computer.

Also, if you need to connect to one or the other, you could turn one of them off while you do your thing with the other. Hope this helps.

Tried turning off the first iMac as suggested. Then tried connecting to the wife's iMac but windows still would not allow me to connect to her iMac. Surely there is some easy way to do this without going through the lengthy process of renaming the second iMac, which by the way, creates a new user name and ID and as such, does not bring along with it everything that was in the original user id that was changed therefore making it an undesirable and lengthy process......

Thanks for the suggestions

Same as above, I don't deal with MAC. However, in addition to what I suggested above, you also need to flush DNS from both MAC machines. Google search for the way to flush DNS in MAC:
How to Flush the DNS Cache on Your Mac - Apple.Answers.com

FYI, renaming the Computer Name/ID should not effect the user credential in the machine so I don't understand why you need to re-create the user/password. Having 2 computers with the same name is like you have 2 houses with the same address.

EDIT: Since your MAC is registered by the router DNS, you'd have to start the procedure from my previous post while keeping your MAC off and your Wife's on.

While I appreciate your very welcome suggestions, I am not so sure I have the necessary computer savvy to implement your last solution. I am afraid if I mess with the terminal on my iMac machines I will screw them up beyond repair......so I don't feel comfortable doing this operation.........I was hoping that there would be some simple solution such as removing one of them from the PC.
Right now we can share files between all three computers with the only exception being the PC will not connect to my wife's iMac.......but her iMac will connect with her PC........which seems odd to me......and every time we try to connect to her iMac from her PC we get the message "you do not have permission to connect to Nancy's iMac ... bad stub" Does that tell you anything????

Have you tried checking the Apple Support forums. This is more of a Samba issue with Mac OS, vs. Windows.

Yes, but all I get from them is that it is a Windows 8.1 issue because both of the iMacs can connect to and access the PC files but the PC will only connect to one iMac but not the other one.........all I get from the Apple forums is that I need to rename the second iMac and that involves a rather lengthy process, and may not work then.......on the older Windows machines I have used in the past, I could always just remove the offending workgroup computer and then add it back to the workgroup and that would usually resolve any problems.......but I cannot find a way to do this on Windows 8.1.........Hopefully someone out there know how to successfully do this......

Thanks for your suggestion.

That is typical of those that do not understand how Samba works. You could try stopping smbd & nmbd services on the offending Mac's. Also try flushing the IP table on the router. The other would be to do a netsh winsock reset catalog & ipconfig /flushdns on the Windows computers, and see if that works.

Actually, I have no idea what you are talking about here.........Samba, smbd & nmbd services.....Offending Macs??? I think I did flush the IP table on the router though ( I unplugged it for 10 seconds and plugged it back in) if that is what you mean.....Don't know what a netsh winsock reset catalog is.......I done the ipconfig/flushdns on the windows laptop two days ago.....but that didn't work...........

I can tell you that at the present time both iMac machines are talking to each other AND the Windows 8 PC through "Bonjour" and right now I am able to share files between both iMacs, and both iMacs can see and access the files on the Windows PC, but the only fly in the ointment is the PC will not connect or access the files on my Wife's iMac even though it shows up in the PC's workgroup. Every time we try to connect, we get the following error.....

"Nancys-imac is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the Administrator of this server to find out if you have permission.

The Stub received bad data"

And that, my friend, is where we are in this mystery.......I keep thinking there surely must be some work-around to this problem........elusive as it may be......

Thanks again for all your help. It is appreciated...

There is no work around. Bonjour has nothing to do with this. Suggest you read up on Samba.

Read up on Samba as you suggested.....Never heard of it nor do not have it.....but didn't see anything there what suggested to me that it would help me with my iMac.....of course, I could have missed something, but the latest thing I read was published in 2011......and was primarily for networking Windows with Unix and Linux....

Thanks again......will keep looking for a simpler solution.....

Samba works with one unit acting as Master, the rest are "slaves". You also have to realize that the router comes into play here. When Samba does not purge old computers or networks, they will show up as still being "ghosts", when you explore the network. All because the info is kept in /var/cache/samba. Is why they still show up. For Windows it is doing the two commands I posted, which usually resolves the problem with that OS.

Restarting smbd & nmbd, will sometimes purge out that old information. Same as resetting the Router/Gateway DNS table. The Samba Black Book is a good resource for this type of stuff. Not much has changed in how to manage Samba, other then cleaning up some items, and fix other stuff, so it is still compatible with the newer OS's. But under the hood, the project is still the same.

Samba.org is going to give you the best resources on this matter. You really have to play with Samba for a long time, to fully understand the little quirks with it.

Hello, again,

Did a search for "Samba" (which is all greek to me) on both iMacs and the Windows 8.1 PC....and it is not on any of them......so obviously it does not come into play here so I guess I am back to square one with the original posted problem......no connection from the Windows machine back to the second Mac, "Nancys-iMac". Like I said, they all are talking nicely with one another with this being the lone exception.....and that is what I have been trying to accomplish. When I originally set this all up, I discovered that both my iMacs had the same name, but only after I connected the first iMac by entering the user name and password and it connected immediately......however, when I tried connecting the wife's iMac, that is when I kept getting the ""you do not have permission to use this network" error message.........So in retrospect, I guess I should have connected her computer first and then tried connecting mine second.....because hers is the one with the files she wants to share........Like they say, hindsight is always 20/20.....So I naturally thought I could just simply reverse this procedure by deleting the first iMac out of the PC Workgroup, leaving only the second one there with the files and it would then connect.....NOT!!!!!! and that, my friend is what brought me to this forum......

Thanks so much for trying to help this old hard headed Missourian, though. I really appreciate your input.

Go to samba.org. Again, there is no easy fix. I have given you as much information that there is, in what to look for. This is not a Windows or Mac OS issue. It is related to Samba on Mac OS.

O. K. Since I am a novice in these technical fixes, I have a few questions about going forward with flushing the cache in my two iMacs and the Windows machine. You have suggested that I begin by powering down my router for 10 seconds, then restarting it. Then flush the cache on both iMacs and the PC. So far, I have already done the router and the PC. once....with no obvious problems with either.....so now you are asking that I repeat these two steps on both the router and the PC PLUS also flushing the DNS on both iMacs......which begs the question......Exactly what will happen when I do this with the two iMacs?? And will this action reset everything I have already done in setting up the networking, etc., etc. Also, will this action affect anything else in the operation of the two iMacs???? My fear is that I will somehow screw something up that I cannot fix by doing this......

Please advise.

Thanks again.

You are going to have to read the wiki information and the Samba manual, to better understand how to do this. The only way you are going to learn to fix this, is by learning. That is how the rest of us figured this stuff out. It sure was not going on a forum and asking for someone to do it for you.

I really didn't ask anyone to do it for me.......You seemed knowledgeable about my problem so I naturally assumed you had experienced similar circumstances and could tell me more of what to expect.......sorry I asked so many questions but I was under the impression that was what the good people on these forums were there to provide......but obviously you don't feel that way.......Thanks again for your suggestions, but since you really cannot tell me what the end results might be, I believe I will pass......and contact the friendly, helpful, Apple technicians who are always eager and willing to go out of their way in solving problems like mine

Thanks again for your suggestions have a good day.
