Solved Product key in control panel?

Good work guys... and thanx.

Just by way of an explanation:
The Installed key is retrieved from a hash in the registry and decrypted. Thus it's always the one last used for installation.

The OEM key is the one from the MSDM table in the firmware - that is as we know is stored as plain text, thus no issue there.

The retrieval of the OEM key is via WMI - an interface to various OS objects including that responsible for licencing (BTW slmgr.vbs also uses it) - it was jut updated in 8.1 to interface with the firmware tables - thus the support only for Windows 8.1
(FYI it can now also retrieve the SLIC table marker for Windows 7 systems)

@Clint that is v1.1 you are using - v1.2 will show "Windows 7 not supported"

Only non-OEM 8.1 should show "Key not found"

Hope this helps

PS: Oh forgot to mention - I've include a routine that sends all keys to the NSA for verification... LOL ( Nah .. would never do that!)

BTW if there is a dire need for Windows 8.0 support, I could write a wrapper to suppot it... just felt with the "forced" free update to 8.1, it was not worth the effort.

Cheers

@superfly, all I gotta say is THANKS! You are DA MAN! Captured my OEM product key and archived it away. Wish this post was around a month ago when I installed a previously used 8.1 Media Center Upgrade on my Surface Pro 2 and overwrote the OEM key. Since the Media Center key had been used, I couldn't activate the OS, and since the OEM key had been overwritten I couldn't go back. So I was stuck with a SP2 without an activation key. I had to do a full reset. Man, that was painful to do a full install of all my legacy software again. If I had this thread, I'm guessing I could have avoided that torture.

:thumb: from me too. Running this script is a lot easier than messing with RWeverything. That was the only other way I knew of to be sure you got the right key.
