No such interface supported [error]

So today I was playing a video game on my computer when all of a sudden my computer totally shut down. When I started it back up, my sound is not working and I am unable to open any folders. I get an error that says "No such interface supported" though I am able to use any program that I have pinned to my start bar. But I'm not able to access the windows 8 menu (the one where you click the bottom left corner, also not able to open it from clicking the right side of the sceen either) I googled the problem but none of the fixes were able to help me. I also ran a virus scan using ESET smart security and I came up clean.

Anyone have an idea how to fix this? My dad suggested I take the computer over to the local shop but I'd hate to waste money on something that is possibly an easy fix. Also like to mention if I run command prompt by using the windows keyboard combination, I'm able to start up any program, but when I click a folder I get the "No such interface supported" error.

Also wanted to mention I cant do a system restore since I don't have any restore points to revert to (stupid decision on my part for not making any)

Welcome to Windows EightForums, Maxxatrill.

Please fill out or post your system specs in order for us to better help you.

Sounds to me like a hardware problem. Do you overclock? How old is this PC?

Alright I just filled it out to the best of my ability, I'm fairly noobish when it comes to computer hardware. Don't know what kind of motherboard/ram I have. And no I've never overclocked it before; and I've had this computer for roughly 3 years.

Ok, thanks. As you may know, video games are resource intensive. This creates heat. Do your fans seem to "roar" up a lot? Has the tower ever been cleaned?

Although I'm not an expert, I have two things to say:

1. Because you say, that the problem occurred when you were playing a video game, and since the error message says "interface", I think it could be a graphics driver thing. Try to load windows in safe mode and see if it works. Booting into safe mode will disable graphics driver and most other drivers for the safe mode session.
2. Although you can't do a system restore, in Windows 8, you have the option of doing a "Refresh". Here is a tutorial on that:

But I suggest that you should try doing a refresh if nothing else seems to work.

I had that problem with my old computer, however this one is really quiet. I've cleaned it once or twice, though it's been a while since the last time. I was planning to clean it tomorrow to see if it would fix it. Also I just ran CCcleaner because apparently it's fixed the problem for other windows 8 users, but it didn't work for me. I'm gonna take it apart right now and clean it out, I'll check back in this thread within an hour.

Good evening, Tony :) Yeah, it is indeed. But I think, we shouldn't really mess up this thread with personal conversation though :p

Have you tried running sfc & dism ?
{in administrator command prompts}

1- sfc /scannow

2- Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

3- Then run sfc again ?

It might help. :)

Nothing wrong with a little hello really.

I think it to be a video card overheating or on it's way out. A sudden shutdown is a good sign of that.

Well, it's midnight here and this kid has got to get to bed. :sleepy:

I hope all works out for you, Maxxatrill.

You're in good hands here at Eight Forums. I'll be sure to check in on the morrow.

I'm trying to do the refresh thing, problem is I cant access control panel. According to the microsoft website, the way to open it manually is by doing winkey + R then type in control. When I do this I get an error.error.jpg

I'm not even sure if I have the original windows 8 discs either since my computer came with it installed already (I bought it through Dell) although I will look around to make sure.

Any other idea how I can access control panel in a different way?

Apparently I'm not even logged in as an administator, which is weird since I'm the only user on this computer. I figure I was already an adminstrator. I will try to find my windows discs to do a clean install, this is kinda driving me bonkers

Also just wanted to say thanks for everyone who's given me advice

So the cleaning to eliminate heat didn't work. We can't rule out a hardware problem, though.

So it continues to boot with the same problem?

PCs rarely come with install media. Upon the very first boot it will ask to make recovery disks. Laptops and some towers come with a recovery partition. What make and model is this?

Are you sure you have no install media?

Correct, the same problem is happening. Still cant open folders, still cant access the windows 8 menu. I'm even having trouble opening certain things through command prompt, such as control panel, but I'm able to open such things as ms paint, or calculator, etc. Just having problems accessing any settings. As for the make and model, I believe it's a
Dell XPS 8700, though I'm not completely sure. I bought it through my dad's company rather than the Dell website so the prices are a bit different. But after looking on the dell website and inputting a few of the specs, I've narrowed it down to that one.

And as for the discs, I just looked around and could not find them anywhere. Found discs for every thing else regarding my computer (monitor, keyboard, etc) but no windows discs anywhere.

Do you have a manual for it? From what I read on the Dell XPS 8700 one needs to make recovery disks. There's no recovery partition that I could see.

Your choices as I see it is to get to get to disk management to see for sure if there's a recovery partition or not then boot to it if there is, get into System Restore to return it to an earlier time, or contact Dell for recovery media.
