New Hard Drive - Win 8 Re Install

Thanks all - I now have a nice collection of ISO'S !!!

Unfortunatley none of them work. I think this is because the laptop is stuck in the automatic repair loop (existing hard drive) - Does anyone know a tool where I can format the hard drive - then try 8.1 core ?
At present I get the blue win 8 logo then it goes to a blank screen....

If you boot from the install media, and select advanced, you get options to delete, create and format partitions.

Unforunatley I get no such options - it shows the windows logo - then a blank screen.

Wait it out and see what happens. I've had a long pause where it seemed like the setup had quit and locked up. Then it continued on. Watch the activity light on your thumb drive to see if it flickers.

well ive waited 4 hours !

BTW - its a dvd not a usb drive.

Hope it is not a DVD-RW disk.. Just a DVD-R
A windows logo means it is trying to boot Legacy, just FYI, since I do not know how it was setup, most newer pc's are UEFI-GPT
There is a tools ISO in my sig below that will give you access to your PC

Yes, if it has UEFI you should see the manufacturers Logo instead of the Windows Logo. My laptop shows an ASUS Logo, my desktop shows the Windows logo. More than 10 minutes and some things not right. Not sure what, but its not continuing the install for some reason. I do all my installs from thumb drives. I just find it easier and faster.

ok - I will try and switch the bios to UEFI later on
other thoughts are to remove the drive - stick it in caddy - format it - then try again ....

Do it if you want to but it shouldn't be necessary. It you've booted from the install media nothing should be running from the hard drive to prevent you from formatting it during the install. If your going to take the time to remove it and put it in a caddy. Fire up diskpart and do a clean all on it. That will wipe it clean.

Set the BIOS to UEFI - Booted from 8.1 core ISO - Got the blue windows logo - then blank screen - then nothing, the hard drive light flickered for about 45 minutes then all went pretty quiet....

Im think theres something up with the HDD Controller - and the data just isn't getting onto the HDD .....

Yeah, something's not right. Maybe there wasn't anything wrong with the other hard drive and its a motherboard fault? Is the hard drive detected and shown correctly in the BIOS?

I put the new HDD disk and it couldn't find the key - so I installed win 7 - but even that was wanting to do a checkdsk on rebooting - then got into a blank screen loop.

Its been a good learning curve - which will help me with future projects repairs.....

But this has to be filed as UNRESOLVED

If you set the BIOS to UEFI and you seen a WINDOWS LOGO - your PC booted legacy...

How did you create your setup media ? Or what media source are you using ?

If your are using DVD's > have you tried a USB stick ?

Does the BIOS have to be in UEFI mode and or Secure Boot enabled for the embedded key to be read? If yes, and it wasn't, maybe that's why the embedded key wasn't used? I have only limited experience with UEFI. The only systems I have with UEFI are my laptops, which have a very locked down BIOS compared to what you see on a desktop PC. I've never turned UEFI or Secure Boot off. I had no need to.

NO - if the key is present (embedded) it will be read by the proper windows version - does not matter uefi or legacy or secureboot on or off

Well from what you just said Clean install of Window 7 needed chk disk and other problems, It sure sounds like a bad hard drive to me?

Ive binned this now.
Just to confirm the win 7 install was on the new HDD.
