After a solid week of non-issues I've marked this as solved. The only question that remains for me is what did this patch do and what was the cause of the problem?

When I can't figure something out that seems to fix itself I blame it on an intermittent hardware problem of unknown origin. That way I don't expect myself to be able to fix it. I sleep better. I know what you mean about the curiosity though. I remember when I was a kid there was this fragrance that was very pleasant I'd encounter every now and then in various department stores. I could never find out what it was. I accepted the fact I probably never will. For one thing it was nearly impossible to describe in words since it didn't smell like anything else in my experience. It just goes that way sometimes. :)
