Multi-card reader not being read - Request assistance!

Hello,
Put together a system and after running down issues and setting W8 the way I like it, I neglectfully forgot to test the mini-card to USB device. It does not work. I was trying to copy something over on a compact flash memory disk I have. I did some basic troubleshooting on my level, went into device manager and found an unknown device, tried to update the driver over the net an it didn't. So any opinions or ideas are welcome.

You will have to install the drivers for it before it works.
Did it come with a driver Cd? If it did try to install it in compatibility mode.
Try to download drivers from the manufacturers website and install them.

Change dropdown to say Hardware ids

Copy/paste results here and I'll get a driver for it.

x86 or x64?

It's gotta be either Ricoh or Realtek I am betting. Those are fairly easy to find drivers for I think.

Thanks for your assistance. Okay it says USB\DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE. Doesn't seem that this will be a big help IMHO.
W8 is x64. It is listed in Device manager as Other Devices > Unknown Device. I'll open it up in the morning as there is no external maker or id. Honestly I don't even know if I have it plugged in right. I just plugged in one of the boards USB connectors....

Old drivers will likely destabilize the machine, causing bsods or at the least, cause latency spikes. The latest driver available would be your best bet.

Try to find something at least 2010 but 2011 would be better, of course.

Which motherboard and/or system? If you don't know: type msinfo32 in the start then press enter. The motherboard is on the System Model line. But what would be helpful is if the system was built by an OEM - Like is it an HP Pavilion, Compaq Presario xyz etc....? That kinda thing...

The msinfo32 should also say about that too.

Just curious.
Did your compact flash memory disk work well with your previous OS? (Windows 7)
If it USB 2 version it should have worked with WCP. I found my compact flash for Roland music keyboard connected normally.

Strange turn of events. I managed to locate a number on the card reader and it indicated a linksys. Went to the linksys site and according to the serial number, I could not update it beyond XP. Had the original acer which I put in. It is working intermittently. Hardware ID indicates USB\VID_058F&PID_9360&REV_0100 AND USB\VID_058F&PID_9360. Device Manager identifies it as a Mass Storage Device. Driver detail is C:\Windows\system32\drivers\USBSTOR.SYS.
When I put a USB stick in it recognizes it and pops a what do you want to do along with the taskbar icon. On rare occassions when I insert a compact flash or an SD card it pops up the what do you want to do and the taskbar icon. When going to the taskbar icon, whereas on the USB stick it has the proper name of the device, on the others it has under mass storage and greyed out the names of the compact flash or the SD chip. Most of the time though I get an error on either of these in the Device Manager under the Mass Storage Unit that:



Thanks for any help. I guessed that getting rid of the old linksys was an appropriate action!

Never used either card reader with W7. They used to work with Ubuntu and XP. Thanks for the assistance!

In Device Manager under Disk Drives (I think, I don't have cards) - should be shown a listing for a card when you put one in.

Go to that one and right click it. Properties | Policies tab

Delete any checked boxes there then click ok.

That should fix the intermittent problem for ya.

No luck, the devices are currently not being read so there is no drive letter attached to them. I did an uninstall and scan hardware and the USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE is now listed as a USB COMPOSITE DEVICE with different device IDs and drivers. USB port works everytime and the others aren't being recognized but the Device Manager is not showing a fault on the USB Composite device?????
Give you any ideas? Thanks for your help!

If you don't have luck finding it, put back the Linksys one and I'll probably be able to find something good for it, or make something for it if not.

It's a bit early for Win 8 drivers I know, Try to find Win 7/Vista drivers for your device (they usually work in Win8)
If nothing's available for these two: the XP drivers are worth a shot (difficult to find: xp x64 drivers)

If your on x64, these drivers would also have to be signed and that makes it a bit difficult in finding a good match.

All these drivers should be manually installed through Device Manager.

Sorry I didn't have a better suggestion by now.

Gman, the best I can find for this reader is XP drivers. If I need on bad enough I could always buy a new one. But that takes some of the masochism away {)! Thanks for any ideas!

This driver thing is a bit complicated for me. I have found for the two Multicard readers, that they stopped updating the drivers at XP. Can these work. Should I bother? Appreciate you stopping in!

Plug it in to other machine, there will be a pop up notification telling about slow connection, unless the USB Legacy is disabled in the BIOS setup.

To be sure I don't care that much. I can get a new better card reader for $10. Know that I think of it, it seems to act like a USB 2.0, no problems. It is now showing the remove hardware/eject on the taskbar. Will play with it some more today. Thanks Sir!
