I have a customer who brought in a gaming rig he "assembled" himself.....Needless to say there were issues. It will not recognize any PCI-e cards at all. The symptoms when his card is installed are a simple attempt at powering up but an instant later it powers off. With my card it powers on but shows no video. The only way to get video is to completely remove all external cards and run with the onboard card. The power switch on top is also non responsive but I think I can work through that by relocating it. Any ideas? My extra pci-e card may be burnt as well as I pulled it out of a similar system and it has been sitting unused for quite some time. The system also has Kracken water cooling which works fine. Any ideas? I'm a lot more break fix than gaming rig in my work. Maybe I'm missing a bios setting?

First question has to be what motherboard and are all latest drivers/BIOS installed for it?

You should really try with a KNOWN GOOD Gpu and in other slots if it has any. Many times if improperly installed or install/remove components without complete power off, card or slot may be damaged. It also may be necessary to turn IGP off in BIOS for a discrete GPU to work. There could be some power problems too. GPU needs added power ?. Too powerful for PSU ?. Any physical damage to card or PCIe slot ?

Thanks for the ideas guys! I wish I had another PCI-E card to try after I try all the other options! I wasn't going to be snarky Popeye haha don't worry. It's very possible he damaged the GPU when he installed the Kracken cooling system. I will update you guys on my progress!
Update: Ordered the $10 video card, installed it, worked perfectly. Ordered a replacement video card for the customer, installed the water cooling system and the bracket, booted, got about 20 seconds of video and the screen went black again. I troubleshot within windows and it wasn't even recognized as a device. I uninstalled it from the original PCI-E slot and installed it two lower. When I booted, the card started to smoke and immediately burnt. After pulling the cord, I saw that the card was flexing under the heavy weight of the cooler. I installed the bracket and cooler properly,. I noticed that there were no attachment points for the bracket on the card on one corner nearest the slot, and that it was slightly flexed. I believe my customer got the wrong bracket and each time the card was installed it flexed more. Thoughts?

Yes. I have one of those testers actually. I swapped out and tested everything as far as power cables. I also tested a generic low value pci-e card in its place and all the slots are functional. I removed the aftermarket cooler from the video card and re-installed the original cooling system and there is no change. I should have tested it in the system before I installed the aftermarket just to be sure it is a good card in the first place. This is crazy.

Well I'm only at this job for one more day so it may not matter. I landed a sweet gig with the state of California DOT. I've worked here three years for minimum wage and haven't ever gotten a raise other than when minimum wage went up. Now it's an income of over 40k at the state and its a lot less work. I'm really only trying to finish whats on the shelves before the next guy has to face the nightmare that is working here.
