MS misses the boat ? POLL

Hi whs,

I might be tempted by one of those myself.

Not just yet - they are getting better all the time.
Me too. Originally I was no big Android fan. It seemed to be stitched with a hot needle. But the feedback on V4.0 and V4,1 is pretty good. And then there is always something new to learn.

My view of the future of tablets
First we need better definitions to differentiate smart-phones, tablets at 5in 7in 10in.
this would then reflect the price range they should fall into.
Look at my "sig-pic" the little guy is a 5" streak smart phone the other is a 10" Hannspad.
They both cost me £150 S/H as I wanted to get my hands on them to test out their potential.

Needless to say both devices got hacked somewhat and what I considered to be useful apps installed
including "decent" as opposed to "noddy" satnav, kindle reader, email, browsers firefox - opera, music and video players etc.F.O.C

I let the kids (40yr olds!)borrow the streak to guage their reactions
Note they both have iphone4s blackberries of some sort and ipads, laptops but are not in IT.
First reaction thats not a phone its a house brick; I cannot possibly use it.
2 days later "I like the larger screen it is better to watch vids - I can can type on the screen easier etc"
Question by me "would you swap your iphone for this"
"NO it is not trendy but if it became mainstream I would"

Coke says tablets are only useful as toys - "pardon?"
MY 10in tablet probably copes with approx 80% of my activity.
I can't run - Excel, Intense GFX editing programs, web development or play intense cpu/gfx games aka skyrim.

The above gives a small indication of some of my experimentation so far.
So off the top of my head here is my breakdown

The younger generation (sub 40yrs) mobility is the key. They have a panic attack if they mislay their phones.
Tablets will kill off the low powered notebooks (not high class laptops).
Phones will grow to have bigger better screens as visual content is more important now

General users 85%
I will divide that into 2 classes -
- professionals with a reasonable income, or company issued devices 15%; will readily spend £500
- mass market (facebook crowd) 70%; £100 to £300 maxing out their credit cards or on contract because it is a must have.

Enthusiasts 10% This is far more difficult as one must consider disposable income; £200 to £600

Remaining 5% Thats us folks! who look at the capabilities, lifetime cost of ownership, £200 to £1000 depending on specific needs.

And from a commercial point of view "and the Winners are" :-
1st; a sub £400 5in smart-phone/tablet for complete mobility as a single device.
2nd place; a 10" - 12" tablet that replaces notebooks with greater cpu/ memory capability etc
3rd place: a 7" tablet mainly because it will end up falling between two stools and it does not fit in your pocket.

Note I have quite deliberately ignored the Apple/MS/Android battles they will all get a share.
my guess is Android purely and simply because Apple is a total -lockout at the smart phone level, Ms are greedy and set their licency fee to high.
The "cloud"/app purchase does not really effect mass market purchaser they do not weigh in the cost of drip feeding £s
they already do that on Itunes and google market place.
10" tablet; MS simply because of the installed base and the fact that the majority by far are windows users.
7" cant really pick a winner here it will depend on price Apple will be fighting off Android, MS will be too high.

Do my all means, disagree, I was reading the thread and replied off the top of my head

Well he is right, sorry

Jeff

I have to edit this:

"The younger generation (sub 40yrs) mobility is the key. They have a panic attack if they mislay their phones.
Tablets will kill off the low powered notebooks (not high class laptops)."

A panic attack.....who are we talking about....younsters 10-12 years old. Come on. And if your phone gives you that...get a life

That tablets will kill the low powered notebooks, that is not impressive. Who wants a low powered notebook or tablet.

As I see it, Tablets are good for fun and younsters, but if you want to use ANY pc seriously, tablets do not do the trick.

I mean, I can well live without a tablet, cannot live without my pc.

Sorry for that.

Jeff

There also isn't much of an argument for android now since the main competitor of the ipad is now Windows 8, it genuinely is.

No, it isn't. It really isn't.

Best case scenario for win8, it rises to "also ran" status, but I doubt it even achieves that.

I never really said that tablets were all plaything toys, not until Wndows came around. I find that Android is more a menial
device that's aimed more on the very casual side of things. To me, I would rather have a tablet that covers more ground usage wise, which Windows 8 does.

But overall, I do agree with your breakdown, it sounds correct.

Jeff OK your opinion.
I was attempting to do this from unbiased viewpoint relative to the future for tablets not my own personal preferences.
I want a proper pc , I am in my study, I can see 4 desktops, 2 of which are servers and the one I am using. A desktop being fixed for a friend, 3 laptops 1 mine 2 being fixed. There is probably another 3 in the house. Does this qualify in your terms
I use a tablet when traveling, in preference to my netbook.
"Get a life" I am to old now 74 - had my first pc about 1983 - Traveled extensively over 6 continents - married with grand children. Ran my own company is that enough.
low powered netbook - the odd million or so who have bought them!
You lug your pc around on business and holiday odds on you will get a tablet in the future.

Coke Ok I will back off a bit, But having used Android 1 thru 4 the change has been absolutely remarkable in the speed of development. I would also bet that I will moan like hell about the price (grumpy old man) but then will buy the MS offering to see if it is good as the hype, then moan again.

I want to add to the younger crowd freaking out over a misplaced phone. Believe me, it happens. I've seen a few people come to tye verge of tears. It's hilarious yes, but a bit sad. There's a saying I've heard. It goes, "Losing your phone is more dramatic than losing your virginity."

Hi there
a tablet might well do 80% of your needs -- butyou probably NEED the other 20% MORE than the 80% -

Here's me - over 40's Engineer -- have I.T Knowledge - used computers for years but not an "I.T'er".

1) I'd be 100% STUCK if I couldn't do EXCEL
2) I could live for WEEKS without Internet - EMAIL, Social networking sites etc.
3) I could actually manage for a few days without a phone -- but on an Engineering project the company would give you one anyway.

To me a Tablet is a Silly device -- the latest generation of smart phones have a decent size screen (Samsung Galaxy III-S) so why would I need a tablet AS WELL.

A Laptop is 100% essential in my case.

Cheers

LOL and a half! It's just not the younger that suffer from this new phenomena. Losing my phone or loosing one of my construction tools is a more worse feeling to me than losing a woman! (I'm not putting down women, for my mother is one)

Also, I haven't voted yet for the jury is still out. I've been doing some reading which includes this thread. A lot of good comments. When is the deadline to vote if any?

FYI: I'm in need of a mobile system. Have an Droid2, but doesn't fulfill total needs. I'm eye-balling the Surface 8 Pro which will probably retail at about a $grand. We'll see.

Hi Jimbo
I would hazard a guess that my usage is very similar to yours
I have never used facebook, tweeted or blogged
Full bloodied PC capability is essential as is excel, I only mentioned it in context of what could be presently achieved on my tablet. But I also have much more time on my hands and use a tablet to read books in bed, play vids, music and read books while traveling.

Staying within the context of this thread about tablets I put a 5in smart-phone in first place.
Choosing among devices available today on a worldwide market place.

The winner is the 4.8" Samsung Galaxy S3. android 4,quad core; stick in a 64gb micro sd card and you have 128gb of storage.
£180 up front £21 a month variable choice on phone/text/data usage.
The s3 and the nexus are causing Apple to spend more on patent lawyers than research .

Sorry to have to post this, but perhaps you need to see this, from the good folks at Nielsen. At his point, windows devices don't even merit a mention. I personally don't expect that to change much. Win8, even for the mobile touch market simply isn't compelling enough to make anyone switch.

As for actual tablets, really nothing for windows, in terms of percentage. Statistically zero.

I have to agree with Rickkins on this one Android based will eventually be outright winner in the smartphone/tablet wars
MS missed the boat by charging too much for the the licence for CE5/6 that powered the small touch devices.
They never became mainstream devices, and support ended with CE6.
I have a number scattered around somewhere a couple of original ipaqs from HP and 2 satnavs
I decided to check on ebay for the going rate and found 7" touch satnav/video player/music/ebook at £50;
needless to say I don't expect they bought MS licences.
This is not saying that professionals will not buy the new MS surface in the same way they are buying ultrabooks
but in the market number terms I would put it around 1%.
In the terms of the poll at the start of the thread I now want to tick every box, I have no idea.

The smartphone market can't be used to compare to the tablet market. You could, but Windows 8 won't fit too well since it's not an OS based off the phone's OS. android is popular to an extent, as in it's used a lot but it's really because of hardware features and real cheap phones that are considered "smartphones." Yes, Windows Phone doesn't show up as that hasn't been getting a lot of clout. But, Windows Phone isn't like Windows, where Windows has a lot of clout and dominance in its market. When people buy a new PC, they go for a Windows PC over a mac because of hardware features and cost effectiveness and the fact it's Windows. When people see a Windows tablet PC, they will be more intrigued by it since it's something SO new and different and allows (if it's Pro not RT) for the capability of a PC with touch.

I see there's possible a spinoff for Windows Phone 8 success-wise. Once someone has a Windows 8 tablet, and discover the Windows Phone 8 and being able to have some of the same apps and games on it as it is on the tablet, to many people that would be just awesome.

On a side note, I want to say something about android in general. I've NEVER heard anyone personally praise their android phone, maybe two people though. Those two people like it because of widgets. Literally, EVERYONE I know that has an android phone, from 2.3.4.5.3.5.3.4.534.432.54.3 to 3.1.4.432.35.34.63.4 complain about lagginess, crappy hardware, apps that screw up, and on. Heck, I've even seen a brand new Droid chucked at a trash can out of user frustration! No kidding! But when you contrast that to Windows Phone 7 users, all the ones I know have NO issue with it. Literally all the consumer reviews of it say that the UI is sleek and modern, the phones themselves are pretty good quality, where the Nokia Lumia 900 is praised in part of the superb build quality of it. I don't know, you COULD compare the smartphone market to the tablet market, but if one did, the Windows tablet would win over android because of the user experience from hardware to software.

I decided to check on ebay for the going rate and found 7" touch satnav/video player/music/ebook at £50;
needless to say I don't expect they bought MS licences.
This is not saying that professionals will not buy the new MS surface in the same way they are buying ultrabooks
but in the market number terms I would put it around 1%.
In the terms of the poll at the start of the thread I now want to tick every box, I have no idea.

Windows Mobile 6 is actually dead. It got later morphed into Windows Phone 7 and the worldwide usage is at a mere two percent. Yes, Microsoft jumped into the boat late, a day late and a dollar short. I don't think it's a tragedy as Windows Phone 8 is coming into the market soon. That's where the next chapter starts.

I don't believe the smartphone could trump over a tablet. First off, I think it's outrageous to have an almost 5 inch "phone" be used as a PC. Absurd.

I believe that the Windows RT tablet will be great for people with limited needs simply because of shear screen size, a 10.6 inch screen beats out a 4.8 one. And, the tablet allows for personal comfort with different input and because Windows 8 is designed to allow the user use the tablet PC in whatever way feels comfortable to them.

Coke Robot you have a very jaundiced view of android devices.
Yes they are cheaper and predominately made of plastic, I have both a phone and a tablet,
they do precisely what they were purchased to do extremely well and I do recommend them to others
as the cost of both was <£300. they live in leather wallets and have not failed once in 2 years.
therefore you can add me to those in favour.
I am a W8 fan and have indicated that I will be upgrading and will in all probability buy a MS tablet.
But I will walk around town with a 4.8/5in phone in my pocket (1280x720 is better than a couple of laptops I have)
not a 10in tablet in a carry case.
Work related activities will obviously have different solutions.
