Well, I EXPECTED just the Desktop shortcut to be removed from the vista start menu list. I did NOT expect that the desktop app to disappear completely from both the Metro Start screen AND the computer, as in gone, vanished, no more. Somehow the Vista (now Win7) start menus are completely tied in with the Metro apps, change this start menu replacement at your peril.

Hi John,

You're right about the start menu - start screen issue.

It seems that the Start Menu is not dead. It became the Start Screen. Technically spoken it's the hidden folder named "start menu" that hosts all the shortcuts of the "start screen". I noticed this after following the second post of Capt.Jack Sparrow here: http://www.eightforums.com/general-discussion/4499-windows-8-tips-tricks.html. You add shortcuts to start menu folder which is actually the start screen.

Hi Hopachi,

Yes I think everuyone knows that already.

Many would prefer the start functions to be accessible from the main ui - and not have the kiddie screen popping up and obscuring the view.

That is why we want some kind of start menu in the main ui itself.

StartMenu7 is very good - there is a free version.

There's a new version of Start8 available. This version allows different sized start panels.

i have taken part with the many other to download the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, however the missing start button erks me everytime, and it's hard to open the charms on my tablet.

anyways, i made a small executable that simply launches metro, if you pin it to the bottom left of the taskbar, it makes a nice stand in for that missing start button.

you can hit the link bellow to try it for yourself

hope this helps someone :)

Windows 8 Missing Start Button Work-Around!

Good program

I'm now used to work with the start screen.
This program is useful because i'm still not used with the empty space down the left corner (good to fill it up).
Also if yo're using Win8 in Virtualbox, the swiping and getting to the corners of the screen doesn't work that well.

Thanks shawn46
