Microsoft’s Leaked Windows 8.1 Update 1 Was Just a Test...

Last week, Microsoft accidentally disclosed several Windows 8.1 Update 1 download links, which basically allowed everyone with Internet access to download and install the new OS version prepared by the software giant for the April launch.

While Microsoft has quickly taken down the links, a Chinese website is now claiming that the build that was delivered to users on that day was actually just a testing version supposed to allow the Redmond-based company to test the update system that’s going to go live once Windows 8.1 Update 1 is released.

PCBeta suggests that build 17031 is not RTM, which means that those who rushed to install it might need to reinstall their operating systems once again once the full build becomes available, as it’s not yet clear whether the new and final version could be delivered via Windows Update to these computers.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 was leaked a couple of weeks ago via Microsoft’s servers and although the company has removed the downloads soon after they reached the web, plenty of users have actually managed to get the update.

A couple of days ago, it has emerged that the version that Microsoft “accidentally” leaked was only a testing build of Windows 8.1 Update 1 which wasn’t actually the RTM flavor we’ve all been expecting for, which means that Redmond most likely continued work on the upcoming OS update.

Now it turns out that a new build has been compiled, with the first signs spotted on a Windows Update page that comprises information about a fix delivered to users as part of the Patch Tuesday rollout.

Well, I'm crossing my fingers that '17031' has long gone to RTM and that anything with a newer number will be a hotfix.

I made a system image of 8.1 before I ran the leaked 8.1 update, so if need be, I will have to restore that image and run the update once again when the official release comes out. I learned the hard way to never make changes to the OS without a proper back up in place.

I fail to see what's the rush in installing an update. It isn't gonna change the OS, it's still 8.1 with a few changes. I'd always rather wait and get the official update rather than rush and regret it

Actually it does change the OS, it adds new features. Features I happen to like and use. If you'd rather wait, then wait. That's not meant to be sarcastic by the way. Some of us managed to find a source for the update and wanted a look see that's all. Most are also already setup with images etc, of their systems before the update was applied so they can undo it fairly easily.

I had an issue with one of the other earlier leaks. I was getting a busy cursor quit often in IE. Smooth sailing with this release.

Some how the option to "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows" got turned off, unchecked? I know it was originally checked at one point, likely when I installed Office 2013. I'm not sure if update 1 turned it off again but it might be worth your while to check your Windows update settings just in case.
