Microsoft scores biggest patent licensee yet

One company—Taiwan's Foxconn—makes a staggering 40 percent of the world's consumer electronic devices.
Starting now, Microsoft will be getting paid a toll on a large number of those devices. The company's long patent-licensing campaign has landed its biggest client yet in licensing Foxconn, formally named Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Foxconn has agreed to take a license for any product it produces that runs Google's Android or Chrome operating systems.

Was it just a coincidence Samsung was hurting Apple sales?

Would they have brought the cases otherwise?

How much success did they have?

The apple v Samsung trial really showed off how it was used to make an iphone knockoff

Nope.

The apple v Samsung trial really showed off how it was used to make an iphone knockoff, instead of being an original product, it had to use ios as a design template quite frankly. If you look at a Samsung galaxy and an iphone, they share quite similar design traits.
I never once considered an iPhone, but yet own the Samsung. I see very little similarities between the devices when you turn them on and use them. The apple v samsung thing was really about the tablets looking almost identical. I don't remember it so much being the phones.
It actually was around the phones themselves...

apple's lawyers were successfully able to argue that Samsung copied their designs even down to the alarm app, citing that apple's ios gave the user a feeling of nostalgia when setting an alarm as the design is intended to look like one of those really old alarm clocks that had the flipping numbers. Really goes to show how "modern" the iphone really is...

"The good news for Samsung is that its Galaxy Tab 10.1 did not infringe the iPad design patent, therefore Samsung did not copy the iPad with its products. While the verdict is favorable to Samsung, it still doesn’t mean much for the tablet market, one that is not only undisputedly dominated by the iPad, but also one that is getting harder and harder for Samsung to compete in as important players such as Google and Amazon (with Apple joining soon) releasing affordable 7-inch devices that cannibalize “regular” Android sales. Moreover, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was also found to be infringing on software patents, so the device is not exactly safe against further Apple action. The iPhone maker is certain to appeal on this ruling, as the iPad is one of its major products and it would definitely love to score a victory in this department against Android as well."

Huge Samsung defeat

I believe the reason why it took the jurors on the case only a mere three days to decide on a three week case was an email sent by some Samsung officials essentially saying that they need to copy the iphone or they will go under, something of such.

Nowadays the with GSIII and the iphone 5, there aren't really any similarities other than the static grid of icons and the default four icons in the dock. With the trial, it was centered around certain particular late model Samsung phones that were infringing on apple. But apple did the same thing decades ago with Windows 1....

Hmmm...guess it was. This all came down when I was sporting a Motorola Droid 2, and prior to that a Blackberry Storm. I went from the Droid 2 to my Galaxy SIII. Couldn't be happier with my SIII. My wife even loves hers, after moving from an iPhone 3GS. She hasn't had 1 second of buyers remorse.

Lol! Reminds me of a late sixties song called Matchstick Men. :D

Great tune, especially with the volume cranked up.

Is there any other way to play rock-a-roll? ;)

I was 16 or 17 when mom got a new stereo floor console with the swing up lid. I had it cranking one day when she came home yelling "Anthony, turn that down!" I said "But Mom! It was recorded loud!". :D Consequently I got grounded off the stereo for awhile. :(
