Microsoft re-releases August Update (Update 2) Windows 8.1

Microsoft has re-released its second major update for Windows 8.1, also known as the August Update (Update 2 for those keeping track). The update originally launched on August 12, but was pulled a few days later due to a few bugs which rendered 0.01% of users unable to use their PC's properly. Either way, the update is back in Windows Update with all bugs squashed, so get updating!

Why's everybody so pessimistic ? Expecting every update to fail ?
MS' record hasn't been good the past 18 months.

W7 has had several dodgy updates in that time (there's one at the moment).

W8 has had big problems with major updates (just check out the posts about W8 to W8.1 issues).

Interestingly I can't recall seeing complaints about XP updates during this period.

Have another browse. It is too long in the tooth, now, to locate specific problems, but there were quite a few.

In contrast (imo) there are very few regarding Windows 8/8.1
You will read on forums of many, but, a closer study will show that they are repetitions of the same problems, ie. the lack of a start menu, and, associated, a new start menu which many see as only useful for tablets/touchscreens.
This site sums up quite well the earlier impressions

Windows 8: The 10 biggest problems so far | ITworld

I will admit, that there have been requests for help in more specific problems. This happened, and is still happening, with XP usres. These were, mostly, concerned with not being able to locate new navigational methods. It may have been necessary, with the complete change of the low level programming, but, perhaps it was a mistake for MS to change so much around at once.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
I remember having problems with updates for XP at the beginning, it would break activation few times and was compounded by slow internet as I was on dial-up and later 3G, Gave up on updates and just installed SPs after that. With SP3 had problems with some Intel systems when installed by itself and had to stream them in, the only way it worked on them. Just couple of days ago, I had to reinstall XP on an old 462 Athlon and that reminded be of another problem when installing XP, if SP3 was installed before sound drivers they would not work even after being installed properly. Win7 also made me a problem or two with updates braking activation too but I wrote that off because it was a volume license and only before SP1. Now it works OK. I, personally, did not have a single update related error in W8 /8,1 except for 8.1 upgrade when driver for my wideo card was not working at all until couple of weeks later when AMD made new "Legacy" drivers. Many had problems with 8.1, u1 though, when on laptops mostly sound would break down.

You have to restart Windows and then try to apply the update!

Update: If this doesn't work and you have Secure Boot enabled in Bios you can try to disable it and then try to install the update.

Many thanks, done it and still it fails with 800F0922. I am totally lost! My computer doesn't have UEFI nor Secure Boot.

I was told it maybe has to do with the recovery partition, yes, I don't have it, neither the netbook or the desktop but the netbook was fine.

and this is on the netbook

Sorry to hear that. As a last resort you can reinstall Windows and make sure that the Recovery partition is created http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2299-clean-install-windows-8-a.html. I also have a laptop with Windows 8 which cannot be upgraded to Windows 8.1 - all drivers are up to date (at least compatible with Windows 8.1 according to Microsoft) but it does not have Recovery partition installed so that may be the problem. I wouldn't even bother to try to install it - Windows 8 is enough stable and Windows 9 is coming out!

Good luck in the future, werty

Thank you again, I will reinstall it and create the partition, even I though the installer made it automaically (what a pain reinstalling all games again). My netbook doesn't have the recovery partition and it's fine, but who knows!

Well, I installed it. The first try I got the the red fail notice with the restart button so I restarted. Computer went through the install screens on shutdown and restart. Went back to the install updates page and it showed fail. So tried again and it took after restart.
A long way to get there but it finally installed. Now time will tell if it introduced any bugs.

Oh..this thread is scary :(
I thought the first release was the buggy, seems re-release just didn't make up for that

Have another browse. It is too long in the tooth, now, to locate specific problems, but there were quite a few.
I meant the last 18 months.
Anecdotally, I personally had some W7 update issues, but I didn't have any XP issues.

I actually had to reimage my PC today, because the current "problem update" in W7 wouldn't uninstall.

In contrast (imo) there are very few regarding Windows 8/8.1
I wasn't referring to GUI issues.

Apparently there was some change in CPU instruction requirements, which meant certain machines could not be updated at all (and it wasn't related to ancient PCs).
