Microsoft goes public with Windows 8.1 upgrade policies

Are users forced to put up with Bing? What happens with local search ?

That's what I'm wondering? I've lost count of how many times I've attempted to hide it in Windows update and it just comes back again as a recommended update. I guess no doesn't really mean no.

I'm pretty confused as to why if you decide to try out these preview builds that you simply are unable to upgrade them with the final code down the road and have your apps preserved. It seems strange that you would have to reinstall all of your apps upon full release if you try the preview...while those who forgo the trial will be able to go to the full release without having to reinstall.
I imagine that in order to make sure the full release upgrade from 8 -> 8.1 goes smoothly, there's a huge volumes of possible scenarios that Microsoft have to code for and test. Think of all the possible settings you could have, for instance.

To go from 8.1 (Preview) to 8.1 is a totally different set of additional scenarios, perhaps not quite so many, but still a pretty big number.

I can see why Microsoft would want to focus on getting the main upgrade from 8 to 8.1 to work and not support 8.1 (Preview) to 8.1 except at a more basic level.

This is my plan for the testing of W8.1:

Step 1. Take a system-image of my current W8 Pro setup.

Step 2. Install preview over W8, keeping programs and apps (apparently this is possible).

Step 3. Test/customise W8.1, test programs and apps. No major issues anticipated.

Step 4. Upon release of the final code, wipe that setup altogether.

Step 5. Restore the W8 image I created earlier.

Step 6. If I decide it's worthwhile. install 8.1 as an upgrade over the original W8, not the preview. This should keep all programs and apps.

So if you want to test the preview, but don't want to have to re-install everything, this is probably the way to go.

Wenda.

EDIT: To fully re-install Windows, all my games, apps and programs, all my customisations and tweaks, and all the other OSes in V-Box takes well in excess of two days on this machine, so I won't be doing that unless absolutely necessary.

This is my plan for the testing of W8.1:

Wait till the Internetz is awash with fanboy reviews and negative comments and then decide. I cant see anything "Game changing " to sort out the mess that is Win 8. I will not be installing any previews at all ....and thats really , really odd for me , when Win 7 was leaking like a bad plumber I was installing every single leak from SoLaR and Wzor going, still have them all on an external HDD (from the sister forum of course lol) It was manic but the buzz and interest has been lost IMO. Never seen a OS lose popularity with the "Geeks" so fast ....Well OK , maybe Vista but sssssh lol.:)

What's the idea with the app store update ? Its kinda like...Oh heres an update ,not that important take it or leave it (Is that true ? won't be through Windows Update ) If it is ,not everyone has a .live.co.uk account and wont know about it. Also ,it will break my start menu replacement software of choice (till its fixed....hopefully).

I think the important thing is that one'sdata and accounts will be preserved. We can always re-install the apps.Nevertheless, I would still backup my data.
