As far as I know, it won't automatically use the key, you have to enter it manually. And just to be sure we are on the same page, this key adds Media Center to Windows 8, not Media Player. I'm just wondering if you're not confusing one for the other?

What starts up OK, Windows? This key isn't for installing Windows 8, its for adding a feature to Windows 8. Windows 8 has to be installed and activated before you can us this key.

Media Centre starts up OK - that's what my original post was about.
I set the key provided for the upgrade Win7 to Win8, then set another key provided by MS to activate the additional feature - Media Centre.
This last key is the one now showing in Sys-Info. I presume keys are iterative and this one authorises Win8 + Media Centre.
I am not worried which key is which as both Win 8 and Media Centre are working fine and I know I am legal.

is it possible windows 8 media center as a standalone installer and install later. i too have sent my email for the FREE media center, but not yet received the key so i will wait till the key arrives and install or add later if possible.

does windows 8 need to be installed before they can send the key. the reason i ask is because i only just bought win8 through the upgrade assistant and not yet installed it. maybe there is some sort of file or setting it looks for to check win8 is installed before they send the key

I wouldn't think so, but can't say 100% for sure. I sent three requests, at least one of them was from Windows 7 and one from 8 RP. I dual boot on this PC. I haven't bought or installed the final release of Windows 8. So far I've got one key. I've heard you only get one per e-mail address so that's likely the only one I'll get. YMMV ;)

I do believe media center is already there, its just disabled. It gets enabled when you enter the code and activate. That's the way Windows 7 works, when you enter a new product code for a higher version like Ultimate, anytime upgrade just enables all the features included in Ultimate. I don't remember what happened when I added Media Center so I'm not 100% sure. I'm still running the RP.

my key arrived after 4 days. has anybody got more than one pc and applied form more than 1 key, how does it work for multiple systems do you get the same key for each system and use it more than once ?
