Is Windows Defender enough?

24 hours ago i would have said yes. last night i went on a website looking for some megadrive ROMS as i downloaded the sega emulator from windows store....you can guess the rest. completely ruined my system. have all sorts of problems. stuff installed i dont want, browser hijacked, desktop search no longer working. i am gonna have to do a refresh i guess....but that will mean i will lose my office suite as i don't have the original product key anymore.

Yeah. The emulater was from the store. On deal of the day. The roms were not though. Had to go on a website for them. Looked legit (well as legit as emulated roms of old videpgames can be). Obviously not. My own stupid fault. I didnt even get to download. As son as i went on there my laptop went crazy and i was in pop up hell. Crazy thing is that my windows defender scan showed nothing and the browser hijack has showed up on my surface. How does that happen? fixing what i can the will take them to the shop i guess.

I use MSE and Defender and like many of the comments here I thought it along with safe surfing would be adequate. But when a program doesn't even catch 80% of known malaware thrown at it for testing I think its time to rethink my decision. Mind you this is "known" malware.

Seems to me it makes more sense to use a program that will catch more of what it should. There are many that do that better than the Microsoft offerings (every other tested product since Defender came in last). Now I have to figure out how I can get something else installed without messing up my machines since the Microsoft products are active.

Free antivirus software Panda tops AV-Test's security rankings

not sure about all av programs but I read somewhere that some will disable mse and defender when you install them ,if they don't just disable the Microsoft ones
