Is the leaked RTM version REALLY RTM - I have my doubts

Hi there
This Leaked version IMO won't be the FINAL version -- I can't imagine the FINAL version having Windows Enterprise N Build 9200 embossed on the desktop screen when the final is released -- so this is probably a "Pre-build". I really can't imagine the Retail / Corporate versions of W8 being watermarked.

Sorry to disappoint everyone but this can't be the one that Ms will officially release --even though the differences might be microscopic.

Just to re-iterate --It DOES NOT prompt for a product key at any point of the install process -- you get a decent quick little tutorial on Navigation while it's finalizing your devices - and the hardware detection is pretty good.

Installed via Bootable USB. -- See Shawn's excellent tutorial on creating a bootable usb from the ISO -- I used the Manual version as per Win 7 Forums rather than download the USB tool which doesn't always work. The Manual version works 100% of the time.

Installed on a small netbook (tried that as I don't use the netbook much any more) - I was going to do it on a VM but as I have a spare computer why not.

Installed in less than 12 mins - and that's on a small Netbook. Hardware detection also better than W7 or W8 RP too.

Other than that it doesn't have any expiration date as far as I can see -- and I'm not sure how many days you have before it needs to be activated.

Add a W7 theme or two -- can't see what all the "Uglification fuss" is about --Looks fine to me. You can also change the desktop images too if you don't like them --they are only jpegs.

Cheers
jimbo

Indeed - quite a few people (including on here) have mentioned quite a few problems with the leaked download. I'd generally recommend getting builds from reputable sources (aka Microsoft or an authorized reseller/distributor), especially something you might run as a primary OS.

I think that's a good bet to make.

Hi there
I'd stick to computing -- if you went into the "Gambling" biz you'd be broke in about 5 mins flat. !!!!!!!!!

I have yet to hear of a single instance of the "Semi - official" leaked version with the apparently bona checksums giving ANYBODY a single problem other than the usual computer problems people have when installing an OS.

Most people are curious and the interface IS slightly different from RP so why shouldn't people try it out if they want to -- most "Decent" torrent sites are passably well moderated these days -- the chances of this preview being a "Rogue" are fairly minor -- and you can always install on a VM.

As for "Re-building your system" - well that's a non issue as who's going to keep this stuff permanently on their machines -- 1) even the RP expires in January, and 2) the leaked version doesn't activate and you have the watermark plus a message to activate at boot time plus a semi permanent Activate Windows message whenever you run a desktop application like Windows Explorer.

(Note you can get rid of the annoying prompt by the slmg -rearm command in administrator mode - then re-boot -- gives you another period of grace -- I think 30 days or whatever).

I think we will all be installing any legit version from NEW anyway.

(BTW I still don't think this is the actual RTM build -- I'm sure a build or 2 more will be done before the actual final release -- but we'll have to wait and see I suppose).

Exactly...

Back with Win7, I downloaded the "RTM" with build string 16384. After that you know the story: they released 16385 (fixed bugs?) to be the final build.

If this is a trend, it will happen again. There is a chance I'm wrong but we'll just have to wait and see.

Maybe it's just the app itself, not Windows, but this is a screenshot of the People app and its help files direct you to the Release Preview forums (unfortunately not Eight Forums :)). Generally, help files in the latest OS version will direct you somewhere relevant. I DO NOT KNOW!!
