Solved is NVIDIA GeForce GT640 better than ATI RADEON HD 7660D ?

Can anyone tell me if the Graphic Card Asus NVIDIA GeForce GT640 (PCI-e, 2GB GDDR3 RAM, DVI, D-Sub, HDMI, 1 GPU) (Asus 90-C1CSB0-S0UAN0YZ) is any better than: OnBoard Graphics ATI RADEON HD 7660D (Asus F2 A85-M Pro motherboard) ?

it's for gaming (War Thunder / World of Tanks / Minecraft and such like)

yes I know it is low end - but so is budget (and its a second-hand one)

I didn't see the HD 7660D (but I didn't look real hard). Here is a comparison of the HD 7660M and the GT640M.
If the 7660D and 7660G are similar, then the Radeon is a better choice.

EDIT: I assumed you are looking at laptop graphics (but now re-reading your post I think you are talking about desktop cards).

Desktop - and the AMD Radeon HD 7660D is OnBoard Graphics, part of the AMD A10-5800 (ASUS FM2 Mainboard)

I did try to do a vs check but I got confusing/conflicting results - my knowledge in this area is too minimal - fast Zero

In my ignorance it looks that the GT640 is slightly more than a “slight advantage” with G3D Mark rating at 1,287 compared to 797 of the HD 7660D – or am I missing something?

(but I guess to "real" gamers this is a minimal difference? But both are a no-go for real gamers I guess!)

Is the difference too small to be worth the bother then ( although it seems better to me!!!)?

Figures below 2k (maybe for some "real gamers" 4k),are not making any difference in low-end gaming.Are the mentioned games really that demanding?If yes,try to "climb" up the 2k ladder,just to make things easier for your GPU and CPU...

I’m not going to pretend I understand this whole graphic card business, because I don’t, and the most, way out of my affordability

But I checked the PassMark list again and found one (Sapphire ATI HD 7750) that was even a little cheaper with G3D Mark at 1637 compared to 1287 / GT640 and 797 / HD 7660D


Still not over your stated 2K but for the moment they are out of my price class


Perhaps the Sapphire ATI HD 7750 (a 2012 model – make any difference?) will do for now (my sons computer) ?

Only seems like World of tanks and Space Engineers may require slightly better video card. Do not know if i missed something here, but what was main reasons you felt the PC needed a better card ? Slow (freeze up) or bad performance in games ? These days mature or not, newer games, yes may require better card. When or before buying game, look at system requirements online. Your welcome

The computer was bought by an Aunt, and someone told her it was better to have a Graphic Card installed instead of using the Onboard ATI RADEON HD 7660D Graphics, so, unwilling to invest much more money, she chose to have installed at purchase a - Radeon HD 8350 1GB DDR3 650 Mhz (actually they installed in PCe slot a: - HIS ATI Radeon HD5450 Silence) – but the computer runs very slow (lagging)/ bad performance in games (even in lowest settings).


So what I was trying to figure out was: if we (actually my son would have to do it because he lives with his mother elsewhere) took the HIS ATI Radeon HD5450 Silence Graphic Card out - would it be good enough to just let it run on the Onboard ATI RADEON HD 7660D Graphics – or would it be better to buy the Sapphire ATI HD 7750 and install this?

In the future we can see about beefing up the computer properly for games – it’s just trying to figure the best option for now.


(Don’t want my son messing about inside the computer too much, so wanted to just do the right thing in the one move = just remove installed card/and use Onboard ATI RADEON HD 7660D - or second option = remove and refit with: Sapphire ATI HD 7750)

(or maybe an ASUS Radeon HD 6850 [EAH6850 DC/2DIS/1GD5/V2] which I can get secondhand without extras [whatever those are anyway] - just the card)

These Radeon cards are made by different manufacturers some changes from model numbers in amount of RAM, connections and quality.
Definitely the HD 7660D is better then the HD 5450. The HD6850 is better then HD 7660D but again requires a 500W power supply over 400W have now. Comes to video cards this is one of the things you need to look at the system requirements of the card before purchase.

Say do not want to mess to much inside the case, sometimes this is also something need to decide when buy a PC then what it is going to be used for, e.g. Gaming, ...etc...

Also as said it's the kind of games you are going to buy that may require more from hardware components in the system. Newer games tend to be now more demanding, older games are less demanding.

Best and easiest ways when you google it, put exact model number after that just put system requirements. Go directly to manufacturer's site who makes model you want. As even though it is an ATI/AMD chipset in card so many manufacturer's make this card, ASUS and so on.......
Alot of time differences in card with RAM is either ddr5, ddr3 or how many Megabytes difference some have.

Basically yes, HD 7750 is slightly better then HD 7660D requires 400W Power Supply with 18amps o 12v rail. Another thing need to know, amperage best if i even knew model of Power supply. Asus ATI Radeon HD5770 ......

one last question

Well, I certainly have learnt a lot these last days, my sincere thanks to jds63, and everyone else that replied, really appreciate it a lot.

I checked out the PSU, found out that it is some crappy China thing (400W 8cm OEM SI) – that will have to be changed in the future – but for now will have to do!

Have gone for the: Sapphire HD7750 (it will run on the 400W or even lower I have read), it’s an Amazon Warehouse Deals one, so I can just about afford it. One thing I did notice – which I very sincerely hope won’t be a problem, or reduce performance – is that the HD7750 is a PCIe 3.0 Graphic Card, while the ASUS F2 A85 Pro has PCIe 2.0 slots!!

My final question in this saga is about the Graphics Card driver:

Do you (usually) get a driver with it, or does it update automatically (via Windows 8.1), or?

My son will have to do all this (unless he finds someone to do it for him – which is unlikely) so what it the best advice, or way of going about it?


P.S.: I did check the makers, AMD website, for the needed PSU, but couldn’t find this information at all, but found it elsewhere - and you had already told me that it was okay. So the makers are not much better for such information!

Don't hesitate to spend on a branded,well known,at least,i repeat at least Bronze certified PSU.
Get that machine a decent,i would say about 500 to 600 Watt power supply,a bit of overhead will not harm,it will sufficiently support most,if not all of your GPU upgrades for the next four or five years.
It is THE most underestimated and in the same time THE most crucial computer component,dont just take MY word for it,do your research,discuss it with any PC builder,it's what is keeping all bits and parts "healthy,alive and kicking".

Yes I will eventually update PSU to a better quality and higher Watt, like you say 600W. And yes, I am now fully aware of the importance of this - I had no idea before - thanks to you all - and many thanks for teaching me so much.

Can my son use the AMD Software = Automatically Detect and Install Your Driver (installing this Software before he starts the Graphic Card exchange process)?


Or should he download and install the new driver for the HD7750 before he starts (or after)? (and when do you remove the old driver (before or after)?

Update: sapphiretech.com website only offers to download the: AMD Catalyst Software Suite - no drivers (as far as I can see)
