You have yet to respond to any of the posts stating this only works if the OS being upgraded is bootable.

Try it both ways and tell us.
I don't believe it would work with anything but windows because only windows has .exe Linux uses a different system.

You can't run a .exe unless there is an OS to support it so you must have bootable media.

Heck, you can't even access a USB flash drive unless there is a running OS or it's bootable media.

I was able to boot the windows 10TP build 10041 USB and install using David's technique. I didn't have to do any formatting or whatever extra(USBs a fat32 default)

This screenshot should say it all. This is the USB that I extracted the Windows 10TP ISO to using 7Zip and nothing else.

If you can boot from the thumb drive there is no need to manually run setup.exe. Did you actually Boot the PC from the thumb drive or run setup.exe from an already running Windows install? Some PC's will Boot from a thumb drive without it having to be marked active. Non of mine will though. If I just copy the files to the drive my BIOS will skip it and boot from my hard drive.

I did it the way David said to, and it booted and installed 10TP in UEFI mode for a clean install, KUDOS David

David, you know I love you but really no reason to get nasty here. People do have different ways to get to the same end. Calling people idiots is not productive IMO. Maybe I'm an idiot too.

I'm trying it now. Using 7-zip to extract the iso to a flash drive. Will see what happens when I try to use it from a boot.

Much to my chagrin, this actually worked though I have no idea why.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R 5520
Dual core Intel i3 2.4Ghz
6GB Ram

I inserted the flash drive I expanded the iso to via 7-Zip then did a Restart.
Pressed F12 during boot and was given the Choose an option screen. It looked like this:



I clicked on Use a device and got this:



Clicked on EFI USB Device, system rebooted and started the install.

Bottom line is that this will work with a EFI BIOS, not sure about older non-EFI BIOS.

I had to see it to believe it but thanks for the information David.

The USB has to be formatted Fat32
Copy or Extract all contents inside ISO to USB

Run Setup.exe from within a windows environment and you get an upgrade

Booting from the USB loads WinPE ( boot.wim ) into memory and you can then clean install the OS

If you bring up your boot menu before booting into Setup USB you will have two options - legacy Boot and UEFI Boot..
You Firmware has to be set to see both options by setting UEFI with legacy Support..

The Setup Media contains both Legacy Support (Boot Folder + Bootmgr) and UEFI Support (EFI Folder + Bootmgr.efi)

You can also force the Setup Media to boot to a certain firmware supported mode by deleting a file or folder..

To Force Setup media to boot EFI - Delete "Bootmgr"
To Force Setup media to boot Legacy - Delete "EFI" Folder
