I Upgrade Windows 8 to 8.1 and Windows Recovery not work

you can reset to factory if you follow my posts.. You do not need any backup media or storage..

Right Charm -> Change PC Settings -> Update and Recovery -> Recovery -> Advanced Startup ->
Restart Now -> Troubleshoot -> Advanced Options -> Command Prompt

type> diskpart
type> select disk 0
type> list volume
type> exit

Verify that H is the drive letter assigned to the recoveryimage partition and C is assigned to your windows partition

Because ONCE you enter DOS the drive letters tend to change, other then what was assigned in windows

Once you have verified that H is the recovery partition and C is the windows partition

type> dism /Apply-Image /ImageFile:"H:\RecoveryImage\Install.wim" /Index:1 /ApplyDir:C:\

Dude you mess up the drive letters with that command - your screwed..
You can change the drive letters in the command to match the drive letters shown in diskpart for those partitions

insert your setup media and while on install screen - select startup repair (bottom left)

or you need to get back into command prompt...

insert your windows setup media and when you get to the install screen hit F10 - that will bring up a prompt
also usually after 3 power cycles if windows fails to load - recovery should get triggered - and get you to a prompt..

at prompt type> C:\Windows\System32\bcdboot C:\Windows

OOBE is Out Of the Box Experience, in case your wondering. If you manage to get the factory reset to work it should be just like it was the first time you turned it on after taking it out of the box it shipped in. I currently don't have any PC's with the OEM factory recovery partitions on them. I've done clean installs on them after replacing the factory hard drives with SSD's. At this point I can't really help you recover yours. I don't have a setup here at home to test on.

That's one of those things I've thought about doing but just haven't bothered with. I haven't done anything with DISM, not yet anyway. I do believe there is a tutorial on how to create your own custom recovery partition. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3610-refresh-windows-8-create-use-custom-recovery-image.html I may have a go at it sometime.

go ahead and create your second partition after C which will your D - Data drive

then run this command

recimg -CreateImage D:\RefreshImage\Cleaninstall

then everytime you want to make another backup image just change the last part to a new folder name -

recimg -CreateImage D:\RefreshImage\Cleaninstall
recimg -CreateImage D:\RefreshImage\folder1
recimg -CreateImage D:\RefreshImage\folder2
etc

Here is a utility that will manage and create your refreshimage(S)
RecImg Manager - Backup & Restore for Windows 8 and Mobile Devices!

because the Partitions where resized by the Bare Metal Reset Feature.. It removed your production line folders and resized the partition to just the recovery image size.. It did what it should have.. And you gained a little free space..
