So, a few days ago the battery of my laptop died and when I charged it and power it up again I found that I can't change the brightness of my screen which I was able to few minutes before. I tried fixing it by going onto control panel>hardware and sound>power option, but it didn't work. It's just stuck. What can I do? Is my laptop broken? Please help

Do you have this:

Check in the notification area for it.
You might have to click the Customize button to find it, if you have it:

Check for the Windows Mobility Center and see if you can adjust it from there.

Could also try cycling the video driver in Device Manager. Uninstall then scan for hardware changes, let it re-install.

Mr Sardonicus - I can't adjust it on the Mobility Center, it moves but the brightness doesn't change.
popeye - How do I cycle the video driver? I can't find it on Device Manager.

Could you please provide your laptop make/model number and answer the following questions as well:

a few days ago the battery of my laptop died
Which battery are you referring to?

Check to see if there are any BIOS-related settings that you may need to reset.

my laptop is a sony vaio, model number is SVE151A11W.
I can't find that model number as listed. It seems you are missing a digit or character. Please check your BIOS for settings related to function keys. Good luck.

I don't know if it's the same issue cause this is what I did when my brightness slider vanished but try the following:

Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager

Once the Device Manger box opens expand the "Monitors" tab

Left Click and Uninstall the monitor listed

Then select the Scan for Hardware Changes Icon

Sounds bizarre, but should work if it's the same issue
