Here are a few good free options in the tutorial below to restore the old Start Menu and start button in Windows 8. They will have the option to disable the Start screen as well.

StartIsBack is a good option that I use. Brings back the Windows 7 Start Menu and also gives some advanced options to disable key elements of Metro. Free trail and is really cheap ($3.00 USD) . If you use a custom Visual Style it is also themable , along with custom Start buttons.
