How to download the Windows 8.1 ISO

OK, I was trying 7-zip 9.22 and 9.20, but only 9.25 and later do the WIMs. Although doing the Notepad search for "9 6 0 0" in boot.wim yielded only four 16384 build numbers, the properties on the extracted winload.exe using 7-zip 9.25 do proclaim a 16415 build.

I do show two updates for win x64 (KB2884846 and KB2895219) as well as a camera codec, flash and IE 11 updates since installation. I thought the GA would already have those in it. Or are these post-GA updates?

KB2884846 is the Oct 2013 Rollup which came out on the 17th. If you look at this picture the RED is the 3 that are part of the GA Rollup and the BLUE is the 2 that makeup the Oct 2013 Rollup. So probably your ISO had the GA Rollup but not the Oct Rollup. Look at Installed Updates and see what you show.

@Dave, Check your pm.

You can't download it on Vista.

If you have key stored in bios ( oem preinstall ) you can't use that to download 8.1. GA either. Oem users have been left up the creek.

What you can do is install it with default key, then activate with oem key - pretty sure the activation will be fine.

You just need to get hold of the iso.

I cant get the new iso sadly always get cant connect at moment I used a retail key I found online to try download iso it accepted key just get cant connect error least I got the rtm iso I guess

Here too! I dont' know what i am doing wrong....

@Dave44

What are you using right now?

Thanks to the OP. This trick worked beautifully and I got the ISO yesterday, actually 2. Let me explain.

The installer/ISO is language specific. For e.g. if your original Win 8 DVD was En-US then the assistant will download the En-US version of the DVD.

Using another DVD for e.g. en-UK, will not give you the Keep everything option i.e. keeping your applications, personal data. I had to download 2 versions - the en-US for my Dell laptop and en-UK versions for my home desktop machines.

Use AIDA64 to determine which one you used to install Win 8.

I know. I was just offering a suggestion. :( ok. I am for the time being, anyway, doing just fine with server.
At least it is one way to get ISO 8.1 TODAY (free) if you can. (no product key required)

Download Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation :D

What are you going to do when the 90 days runs out?

Sorry for being out of sequence with the flow,

 well... I am not using windows 8 (or 8.1) at the moment. Server has metro and it does what I need.
In any event, when Stardock gets Deskscapes to work on the start screen properly in their upcoming new release, I may upgrade 8 to 8.1...but for Enterprise 90 day trial, I would gladly reinstall... I don't seem to be having install issues... It only takes about 7 or 8 minutes to reinstall to default configuration.
...and being the bored geek that I am, choose to pass the time reinstalling stuff.

It's still a nice freebie to get it and not have to use a product key.

That's fine but its a time limited 90 trial. That's why you don't need a key, it stops working after the 90 days runs out. You can't enter a Retail key either, it will only except an Enterprise key. It's a nice option to have a look see but most here are looking for a more permanent solution. That and they are already running 8.1 and need the install media.

People who buy one of these upgrades will be doing a download though?
Windows 8 - Microsoft Store United Kingdom Online Store
Windows 8.1 - Microsoft Store United Kingdom Online Store

Are you saying that the download is the same for both and the Core Product Key disables the Pro features?

The upgrade Product key will only download Pro.

Yes but if you buy a Core Product Key from one of those links in the Microsoft Store (which is an Upgrade in the case of 8.0 and Upgrade+anything else for 8.1) , then you'll get a Core Product Key and presumably somewhere to download it from.

I used an 8 Core retail key and my download was Core not Pro.

Question: you're telling me they would put out a new build over couple of days of Windows 8.1 being out, or is it that there is just the one in microsoft store and the technet one leaked over internet? This is getting confusing:p

The one you get though the Store is a new build. Its being referred to as the GA build. General Availability. The leaked TechNet ISO was the RTM build. Release To Manufacture. The GA build is newer and has updates not found in the RTM build. If your doing a clean install you want the GA build. Microsoft has not put the Retail GA build up on TechNet. It wasn't there the last time I checked, so the only way to get it is with this download work around.

It looks like the files downloaded are saved somewhere on your PC even if you make the ISO. If you run it again it skips right to the install part without downloading. You can then select the bootable USB option. You can make an ISO and a bootable thumb drive without having to download twice.

If anybody's interested the downloaded files are placed in a hidden ESD folder in the route of your Windows drive. Once your all done making your media you may want to delete them to free up space. I haven't figured out how to make WindowsSetupBox.exe start all over from the beginning. Now when I run it, it skips right to install Windows. If you delete the ESD folder it will still try to make the ISO but fail.

Thanks Mosharino,
I downloaded and copied the ISO to a USB drive successfully.

Probably rather a simplistic question but I'd also like a bootable DVD. Can I just burn the USB files to a DVD to achieve this?
Thanks in advance

If you run though it again it will skip right to the install part without downloading it all again. The select create ISO instead of create USB drive. Then you can burn a disk from the ISO. If you just copy/burn the files on the thumb drive your DVD won't be bootable.

I don't know why the sizes are different but technically, your not actually downloading an ISO. Your downloading a folder full of files, and then you decide what to do with them. Make an ISO, create a bootable thumb drive or install from the folder. The ISO is actually created on your PC not downloaded.

O.K. so that is the way i did it,from the OP's first post here,so i am good to go.ty:)
