Hi Guys,

Thank you very much for your help last time. I guess I have a real challenge for you this time. The last time I tried to upgrade my windows 8 to windows 8.1. I was not able to download anything from the internet.... As I tried to reformat my computer and reinstall windows it did not let me. I had to use one of the Sony Vaiogate apps to do this. Nevertheless I spent 2 days rebuilding my computer. In the end I managed it but I turned off all upgrades (because if I upgrade it sees my home wifi router, it connects to the internet, but the browser does not see it and I am unable to use the internet.). My computer has been running without any kind of upgrades (except for the anti-virus software) for about a year now. How can I then upgrade from windows 8 to windows 10 if my computer is not able to get connected to the internet again after the first upgrade? Can I get a windows 10 installation DVD if I send you my windows 8 registration number? Do you have any kind of solution to this problem? Thank you.

I just looked and there is no product key sticker on my laptop even though I bought with windows 8. Any idea where I can find it?

You don't need to know what your key is by the way. What you need to know is the "Original Edition" shown by showkey plus. That's the version you need to download. Install with the correct version and it will read your embedded key automatically and you will not have to enter one. If you get prompted to enter a key, you installed the wrong version. Entering your key manually at that point won't work either. It's already be refused/rejected.

Thank you guys, but I got lost here a bit.... I have Windows 8 and want to upgrade to 8.1 to be able to download Windows 10 when it comes out. What do you mean by installing the right version? And is there any way to back up the system to be able to revert to Windows 8? Last time I did the upgrade through the App store my laptop could not connect to the internet afterwards. What I mean is I really need to think this through before proceeding as this is my only laptop which I use for pretty much everything.

If you download Windows 8.1 from here, Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help. You have the choice of 8.1, 8.1 Pro, or 8.1 Single Language. Each one takes different keys and the keys are not interchangeable. If you laptop came with just Windows 8.0 or 8.1, and you download and try to install 8.1 Pro you'll get asked for a key. Your non Pro key will not work. That's what was meant by "install the correct version". You can clean install 8.1 with this install media and skip having to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1. That download will accept Windows 8.0 and 8.1 keys. It will even read and use OEM embedded keys automatically. You could also download the corresponding version for your laptop, and just run setup.exe from your current install to upgrade. Or make bootable media and boot from it and do an upgrade.

Thanks guys. One more, albeit maybe stupid question. If I upgrade for windows 8.1 will my laptop be able to connect to the internet or will it be the same hassle as last time?

Unless somebody has that same hardware, they can't really answer that question. I'd go and hunt up a Windows 8.0 or 8.1 driver for your NIC or Wireless card, if you can find one. Then put it on a thumb drive in case you need it.

As far as going back to what you have now if there are problems the best way is to buy an external USB hard drive then use Macrium Reflect Free to do an image backup. That way you can get back to where you are right now in about 30 minutes.

See this Tutorial by WHS: Imaging with free Macrium

Yes correct you should go to your manufactures website and download the latest 8.1 drivers before you start the upgrade. I know on my Asus G75 there were some driver files that needed to be update before the upgrade starts I believe they were WiFi and Bluetooth drivers. Your notebook or MB could have the same or different. Its always good to check out that support site and Forum if they have one.. and once windows 10 gets released you should check in again to see if there are new drivers for 10 or issues that might prevent the upgrade from being successful.
